Oh I agree. I did not mean an 'intentional' cutting short of treatment... even though in some cases that does sometimes happen. Even when it does happen, there is no intent to cause harm... I was just saying it's best not to rush the cure in these cases... for whatever reason. Knowing what I know about HGE, if my dog is not 100%, if I have any doubt (not doubting my vet, either), I opt for an additional day or days in the hospital, only because I know firsthand how insidious this disease is.

Just funny though, as Peek a Boo doesn't do chews of any kind (his choice) except for hooves (my choice having worked with horses I can't deal with them, even seeing them in a bag in a store upsets me:eek:) so basically one could go a bit overboard with eliminating things. And one could eliminate everything and still have a recurrence. So with him, it was more likely stress induced.... some vets even recommend a change in the diet after a bout of HGE...

I don't think they are totally convinced this is HGE, but again, the vet is excellent and if Apple continues to have problems a solution will be found.

Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis (HGE) usually causes a very sudden onset of vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration and depression. Dogs affected by this condition get very sick, very fast.

That is exactly who we see! She is very good with my liver baby. I am so glad to know that about the orthopedic surgeon. While having Lola's shunt repaired in TN, we were informed that she had LP in both back legs so it's only a matter of time before I'm sure we'll be looking him up! It's amazing what these really good specialists can do. I'm sure you have seen it all with the babies you take care of.

My two LOVE Bully Sticks!!! I've never had a problem with them...so far. :confused: Are there brands that aren't good to buy or give to your dog?? I buy the "MOO" and the "Red Barn" brands. I haven't been able to find the "Moo" ones lately though.

She may never need surgery! My Maxwell who died at a very old age (he was a rescue so age was a guess) had LP all the years I had him (11) and it never got worse and he never needed surgery. I can tell you that Dr. Beale is very conservative about surgery for LP. If it is not causing problems, he does not operate.
He did tell me that a puppy with open growth plates does need surgery for LP.

Just seeing this and I cannot tell you how terribly sorry I am. I will keep little Apple in my prayers and will be checking for updates. Have the diagnosis been confirmed? The symptoms were similar to my friend's baby and we almost lost her recently. Fortunately, she is near a large hospital who quickly diagnosed the problem which was a ruptured gallbladder! I have never been so scared in my life and we are so blessed that she was in the right place at the right time. I am praying for the same wonderful outcome for your Apple and you. God bless you.

I'm sitting here, trying to think of words, worthy enough to tell you how moved I am w/all the prayers, for my little Apple (and me!)...Thank you, just doesn't seem enough, but it's all I've got, so thank-you, sooo much...I just fed Apple a very small amount of RX ID, and so far, so good...I have to realize her two major events happened a week apart, so I'm going to be cautiously optimistic...So many of your posts have given me hope, that there will be a solution, even if we have to work through it...Believe me, I've taken notes! Thanks Lin, for always being there for me w/my babies 24/7...Your experience and willingness to help w/every pup is amazing...I'll keep everyone posted on Apple's progress...Thanks!

Maggie, I'm just seeing this. I'm sorry little Apple isn't feeling well. Please know you both are in my prayers! It sounds like she's getting wonderful care, so I know she'll be back to her normal self soon.

Have you tried CET chews? That's what I use...very good for teeth too. I use only the Medium size so that the choking hazard is minimal (vs. the Petite size).

Prayers for Apple! It sounds like you are doing treatment just fine so you should ignore those particular posters who want to cast judgment on your actions -(including some people who do not take actions for their own dogs, by the way) and keep doing what you are doing for her. I would trust my vet before anyone on the internet, no matter how much they *seemed* to know.

I did want to point out that my Daisy who has many medical problems also had similar type diarrhea for years on and off as a younger dog.....the cause was NOT HGE....it was Irritable Bowel Disease. Treatment for her diarrhea, along with finally finding the right diet for her, has kept her free of the issue for many years now. I do not give my dogs raw food and would never feed raw for various reasons that I won't get into here and I do not use any chews with any risk of bacteria such as bully sticks in my dogs with medical concerns.

I'm sure your vet will get to the bottom of her issues, but I personally would stop any raw food and any chew or snack with a probability of introducing bacteria to the gut. I'd wash all toys or replace them. I'd keep bedding very clean and floors where she might lick.

Cathy what is the difference between HGE and IBD? The symptoms sound alike. I also didn't know about washing the toys.

Good suggestion. I also use the chews but in petite size and Buster sometimes has trouble with the long strip shape.

How is sweet Apple today? Hoping she is continuing to get stronger and that she feels better.

I'm being cautiously optimistic...She still sleeps, more than she used to, but will rally and play w/Buzz and Apple for short periods of time...She had her first bm, since the serious event on Sunday, that had her back on fluids and meds..She did have some mucus, but no bleeding, so I'm hoping it's all going in the right direction...I believe the next few days are crucial...She only has two days of antibiotics, so I'll be interested to see how she does, after she's finished...I sure do thank you, Kristin, for asking about my Sweet little Apple...
