Scratching and biting down to skin My two year old yorkie has developed an allergy(said my vet) .He has been given cortisone shots along with zyrtec twice this was a temporary fix for about six week each time .I have changed his food and shampoos and it did not help.He was checked and does not have ticks,fleas or mange.My vet said after testing he may need allergy shots daily something I do not want to put the little guy thru.Has anyone had a problem like this and what did you do to cure it or can anyone advise what might be a natural cure or help. Also this is NJ we have two feet of snow if it is an allergy I do not think it seasonal. Thank you |

Even if it's not seasonal, it still may be environmental (dust, dander, etcetera). The very best thing you could now do is to see a Vet Dermatologist - they will be able to diagnose and advise you much better than a general vet. Other meds that can be tried: Atopica, Temaril-P. Keep in mind that if you do want allergy testing, then the best thing to put him on is Atopica....bc prior to allergy testing, steroids must be out of the system (but Atopica is fine). The Zyrtec has to be given every single day. What are you feeding? When did this start? Did it coincide w/ any changes? Btw, allergy shots are usually only given once a week, or every two weeks...and then less than that after they start responding. So, he *does* experience some relief after the steroid shot? |

What symptoms is he having and how and where did it start? What did you first notice him doing when you suspected a problem? Was there any changes in his environment that day or say the week or so before you noticed a problem? Does he show symptoms all the time or are symptoms worse at specific times? in specific areas? after specific activities? |
boy oh boy have I had this problem .. but with my shih tuz and Laso not my yorkie. I have read a lot of info about what to do to help on this website and from my vet and just trial and error. One-- the food. A lot of dogs can not eat corn. or wheat. I started give omega 3 oils-- fish tablets or samon oil. There is a web site that www.dinovite.com -- check it out -- they sell supplements that really work!!!!!!!!!! two -- I also read on this site about adding apple cider vingar to water.. it has to be organic with the "mother"... I have been using for about 10 days and I can see improvement over and beyond the other supplements. I really started for the tear stains on my white shih tuz. I have had shots for my guys and it did help..for a while. The vet also said it could be flea bites. They don't have fleas but he said when they are out and about they may get a bite. I not so sure if I agree.. but?? Bailey will chew the hair off his paws if I don't keep up the supplements so I don't think that is fleas:confused: Good luck.. I know you will get good advice on YT |
I also had this problem...not with my yorkie but with my westie. He would chew/bite/scratch himself raw! I took him and had allergy testing done and he was allergic to numerous things!!! Since your baby started in October I am thinking dust or something in the house that gets stirred up with the heat going and the house all closed up. My westie is allergic to dust/mold/pine needles/some types of grass and believe it or not human dander! He is also allergic to ALL grains so I have to feed him grain-free food. I feed him AND my yorkie Evo grain-free small bites and they both do great on that. Been using it now for about 3 years. I also had to give him allergy shots for about a year. He also has done better since we removed all the carpet and replaced with wood floors. (If you have carpet he could be allergic to all kinds of stuff in there.) Dont know if this helps but sometimes you just have to use the process of elimination I think. It takes a looong time tho. Oh and before i forget ...do you use air fresheners or carpet powder? Thats sometimes the culprit too. Good luck with your baby...hope he gets better soon! ;) |
I as well have the same problem with my Maltese, Romeo. He went through the shots at the vets office once every 6 months he did that 3 times in 2 years. I now have changed to Blue, Chicken for small breed. I thought it was helping but he started the itching again. So I put him on California Natural grain free. All was good until tonight and he started itching his muzzle area and his feet. So I think the next thing is a Allergist. Good luck on your little one.` |
I have heard that chicken is the #1 allergen in small dogs, esp Yorkies. I know of one that is only allergic to the chicken in dog food, he's okay with chicken from the table. |
Exactly what Wylie's Mom said. Atopica is an immunosuppressant that should help if this is environemntal (not food) allergies. It is worth a try, but not something that is great for lifelong use. Probably better than steroids though. Allergy testing with injections following (if it is envir.) would be much healthier for your guy than using these other drugs. Blue would not be a food used for an elimination diet though. He needs a novel protein and carb (or hydrolyzed protein). Where is he itching? |
We changed to Taste of the Wild, it is grain free. Also we use aloe and oatmeal shampoo from the vet for her allergies. She got a steroid shot about 2 weeks ago. Has been doing better, I'm hoping the change to TOTW will help. |

chester has allergies to the enviroment, so he is really sensitive skin, I use all free and clear for laundry soap, nothing in the carpet, no plug in freshners and I use grizzly salmon oil that has helped. The temaril p and all that stuff if it helps, it is the dust dander etc, anithistamines do not help with food allergies,which it dont sound like. I will sometimes just rinse him off with luke warm water and that sometimes will help, I use fluffy puppy hypoallergenic shampoo on him from bio groom, alot of other stuff he will break out in almost hives, good luck |
