Just got home from the groomer's and now limping?!? My Molly girl was just picked up from the groomer's and not she is holding up her back left leg. I have palpated her knee, hip, and foot...she doesn't cry out in pain. No stickers in her paw either. I called the groomer's and they said she was fine when she went out to potty and they didn't notice anything. When my husband picked her up he said a very little girl brought her out...I hope she didn't drop my baby:confused: I am kind of grasping here but I don't know what could be wrong. She looks pitiful when she walks...kind of hobbling but she doesn't seem to be in any pain. My vet of course is out of the office today. Should I worry or wait? |
Hi welcome back! I was just thinking about you yesterday... hope all is well... As long as she's not in any pain, no obvious swelling, I think it's okay to wait till morning. Maybe restrict her a bit to prevent further injury... JMHO :D |
I would keep her quiet and no jumping at all until you can get her to the vet. I hope it is just a strain and she will be better in the morning. |
Please let us know what's going on. My little guy squirms around a lot at the groomers, and one time he got clipped under the eye with a nail grinder. He's fine now, but at least the groomer was honest about what happened. I'm not trying to imply that your groomer did anything, but there is just too much a coincidence here. Might have been accidently caused by another dog and nobody saw it. |
I would not be happy if a little child brought out either of my two. Check and see if they cut her inside the paw area...or clipped the nail too short. I hope they don't allow the child to handle the all the dogs, but if she brought her out then I'm sure they do. I would check all over and then find a new groomer. |
I took my baby to the groomer a few yrs ago & she came home with a limp. Turns out she got her toe caught in the grate in the bottom of the cage & broke her foot. Now when I take my babies to the groomer, I make them take that grate out of the cage. |

I have seen them limp, also, when a nail was cut too short. |

I was also thinking that it might be a nail that was cut too short. I hope she is better today. |
I would have a FIT if a child carried my pup out to me. What is wrong with that groomer? ugh Fire her! I hope Molly is ok today. |
Hope your baby is better today. I picked Kayla up from the vets one day and got home and she was limping. Scared me to death because of course the first thing I thought of was someone dropped her. I called and turned out the tech cut one of her nails down in the quick. Do you think maybe something like that could have happened?? Hope its nothing more than something like that. A child bringing her out would have really upset me. |
Thank you for all of your support! It did get worse as the night progressed. Molly couldn't even hold herself up. She looked miserable all night. I felt so terrible for her. I had to help her out to potty:( My husband took her to the vet today.....She has a torn ACL in her left knee:confused: She also has mild luxating patellas in both legs. She will be limping for a while....anti-inflammatories, pain meds....I have been at work all day and have to work a 24 hour shift and I feel so bad because I want to hold my baby! Plus my husband never gets the info that my type A self does:D Do you guys think that the torn ACL was caused at the groomer's or is this common with luxating patellas?? It is just soooo weird because when she left she was FINE and when she came home she was NOT FINE. I feel like this was caused at the groomers but it could just be a coincidence.... I don't know. I just want my girl to be okay. |

I strongly suggest you take her to a board certified surgeon and speak with him/her about this ligament tear. The surgeon I use said that they must be repaired surgically or the pup will develop severe arthritis. It is not a comfortable injury for them either. :( I am sorry to hear this. I would probably be pressing pretty hard on that groomer...if she is letting a child carry pups around, she is clearly not careful imho and/or knowledgable about how fragile yorkies are. |
I agree, I don't think a torn ligament is lux-pat related. :( Get it in writing from the Vet though. I would think that your groomer should pay for the surgery. |
Oh, a torn ligament is definitely related to LP. Pups with LP are more prone to tears in the cruciate ligament. It does sound like something happened at the groomer. Here is a link with information. So sorry to hear this... I would be highly suspect of the groomer also or what went on there while she was in their care.... |
Awww poor baby! I agree about taking her in to the vet if she is still limping by morning. I would also have a discussion with the groomer about a small child handling your pup! I would not be at all happy about that. Unless I myself have instructed and know the child, I would not want them handling my pup at all. That is NOT professional either. I would doubt her insurance would even cover that sort of behavior. I am not anti-kid by any means, but yorkies are so much more delicate than most dogs a person comes into contact with that there is no reason to think a child would understand unless specifically trained. Two of mine have had limps at one time or another. Most recently Annie, got knocked over as the other two started running in the back yard. It did not look to be much of anything as I saw it happen. But she yelped and limped from that moment for about a week. I had her in to the vet twice. The first time the vet thought nothing was broken, and decided we should give it a day or two. I waited a day and then requested an xray. All was good and there still was no spot where she cried out or acted like it hurt. She just continued to limp. We were going to have to go for an MRI when she suddenly just stopped the limping and was like it never happened. I will pray that it is the same for your little one -- hopefully she won't limp for a whole week like that but it will be great for it to be nothing serious too. They get soft tissue injuries just like us and sometimes it could just be a bruise. Time to find a new groomer though. I just don't like giving second chances when I see them doing something as unsafe as letting children carry the dogs. I used one groomer that had just opened in our town. They did a great job on my Ben, even let me stay with him, which most would not do. But, while I was there, the owner told a man that she would board his dog that was being treated for heart worms. After she got off the phone with him, I told her I could not help but hear she was going to board a dog with heart worms. She asked, "Are they contagious?" My jaw dropped and the decision was made -- NEVER would I come in there again. New or not, some things you STUDY BEFORE you open! I told her how horribly contagious and deadly they are. I did say I was not sure about when they become non-contagious during treatment but that I would not bring my dog back knowing this. She called her sister who owned a grooming shop in the next town over, verified what I had said, and called the man back to say she could not board his dog. Then he changed the story and said his dog would just be finishing the treatment when he as scheduled to bring the dog in. Then she said okay to him about the boarding again (without any call to a vet to find out when the contagious period would be over or to check if his dog really would be finishing the treatment before the boarding date). I never went back. Any breach of safety just is not worth my taking a chance with my pups who depend on me to make the right decisions. I would put a child carrying my yorkie in the same safety violation group that would ensure I never used the groomer again. |
