My little Izzy's problem Hi all. My 6 month old girl (6 lbs) is having diarrhea off and on now for 3 days. She still seems hydrated, gums look good, not sticky, is playful etc. I have been introducing a new food. She was instructed to have the Fromm puppy gold. Well she just plain hates it. I give her carrot bits, and carob chips from time to time, and it seems to be fine. SO at the puppy socialization class last weekend they gave us several samples of high quality puppy food. SO she get mixed in Innova puppy food. SHe loves it and has unconditionally boycotted the Fromm. I am not sure what to do. I am waiting for her to poop today, (4th day) and see if it is any better, if not I figure I will scoop the poop and get in to the vet. Sound right? am I missing anything? Any suggestions? I would rather not take her in, as the money is an issue for me, but I do want to do what's right. Also, I have been giving her a couple of tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin for the last few feedings. You could never tell by her actions that she is sick, maybe she is not, maybe its the food changeover? |
Hi and Welcome to YT! A teaspoon of pumpkin with each meal is plenty, you could change to a bland diet of chicken (no bones, skin or fat) and plain (Uncle Ben's) white rice, (1 part chicken to 1 part rice... equal amounts) to settle things down then gradually reintroduce her food with the chicken and rice, then gradually decrease the C&R till she's back onto just her food again. Continue with a teaspoon of pumpkin with each meal. Stop the carob chips. Any changes in her behavior, gum color, hydration, or if the diarrhea doesn't clear up in 2-3 days or gets worse... get her in to see the vet. |
I would try to get her in to see the vet. Better to be safe than sorry. Hope she's doing better. |
As far as the food, I would let her have the one she likes, as long as it is a good, high-quality food. Don't give too much pumpkin, as it may have the opposite effect. |
Update on Izzy: Thanks everyone! I have taken the advice of you all and her breeder. I was giving WAY too much pumpkin. Like 2 tablespoons. SO I'll cool that until it has a chance to pass. Carob drops done for now. Giving her the puppy chicken and rice sample from the distributor rep. Izzy likes it, and I think it might help with the calming. Kayopectate <sp> was suggested. I will wait for 'results' :-) before giving that. I was told another couple of days with close supervision/observation then vet action. Initially I took her to one vet, locally, and even though they come well recommended for Yorkies I did not like my experience there at all. I am thinking I would go to the one a couple of towns away that I took my lab to many times. I am writing al that because I am thinking I should call the other one and make sure they are on board with a new visit on an 'on call' status. |

Thats what I am saying. I had already given her the pumpkin. Anyway, Hopefully she will be better now, and hopefully, if she's not I can get enough snow out of the driveway to get her to the vet tomorrow. Supposed to be an interesting night here weather wise. Again. Thanks, and I will report back. |
So glad she is doing better!! I can relate to the pumpkin thing because when Gilmore at one time seemed to be having problems going potty I gave him pumpkin. I obviously gave him too much and it was a disaster. He was pooping nonstop for 3 days. It's funny now but it wasn't then especially in the middle of the night. |
Izzy is doing better! Not solid yet, but MUCH firmer and less runny and not spreading it all over after. Breeder said 2 pts rice/1pt chicken. Bland, bland bland! Well it seems to be working! Thanks for all the input and concern! |
