Found out today 1yr old has renal failure Hello, I've had a ROUGH 48 hours....it all started when I took my 1yr old Max to have his shots. The vet said he has peridontal disease, wanted to do some bloodwork to make sure he was up to the procedure since they would have to put him out. Max had been losing weight (went from 3.5lbs to 2.7 as of today) but he has always been a picky eater. Also his dad is 2.5lbs so I assumed that he might be a tiny guy. I've had to switch his food several times but no matter what, he seems to like the wet vs the dry. I got alot of receipes from the wonderful people on this site and have started feeding him that and he loves it (rice, chicken veggies, etc). Well today I got a call that his bloodwork shows he has renal failure. His BUN is 174 and creatine is 3 (I'm not sure what those number mean but thought I'd share in case someone else does...) At the present time, he is at the vet receiving fluids and hopefully we will be able to bring him on on Sat. They are also going to do another test to see if he's responding to the fluids and medication and let me know what the next steps will be. I was told he will have to have fluids done at home and change of diet, that this is terminal and that they will try to make sure he's comfortable. So I'm trying to brace myself for the worse, which I just cant imagine because we havent had him but only a year. I feel so ridiculous because I cant stop crying. I came home tonite and he's always so happy to see me....today there's nothing and its heartbreaking. I asked the vet what the prognisis is and she said he may survive 6mos to possible 2yrs. All my life I have always wanted a Yorkie and from the first day I say him, he was so perfect. He literally picked us and after we left the breeder he tried to follow us out the door and we knew then he was "the one." I feel so helpless. I've called the breeder to see if she has any suggestions and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a second opinion. No ultra sounds have been done at this point only bloodwork. I will add that in July, Max had a couple seizures. Test ruled out liver shunt and nothing seemed to be going on with his kidneys so they speculated epilpesy but he never had any others. Has anyone been through anything like this? Thanks, Tyra |
Oh honey, I can't tell you how very sorry I am, but know my heart is breaking for you. I have lost dogs to kidney failure in the past, but due to old age. I can't imagine the devastation you feel at only 1yr. I can offer no advise, only that I knew when it was time to step in and take my babies out of the pain, to a better place. I must tell you, it's the hardest thing each and every time, but it do feel it was the last love I could give them. I will pray for Max and you. Hugs from me & Zhoie. |
I am so sorry, and I really don't have any advice. I will keep you both in my prayers and you'll always be in my thoughts.... |
I am keeping Max in my prayers and hoping for that miracle. |
I am so sorry that you got such bad news on your precious Max. I have no advice to give, but I will be praying for both you and Max...for a miracle. Hugs to you. |
I'm so sorry!!! I can imagine how tough this must be for you. I will pray for him. |
First let me say how sorry I am for both you and Max. At one year old and in renal failure....I'd want to find out why, so a second opinion is very good to have. At this young age, it is likely a genetic disorder of some sort vs a vs the kidney. There will be other posters who can explain what those results mean in layman's terms. I am glad you called the breeder because she will need and should want to know the results of any specific diagnosis. Unfortunately these diseases can come on very quickly, it is thought that by the time organs show poor functioning that about 85% of that particular organ is Not functioning at all. My heart goes out to you and Max, you will be in my thoughts and prayers, please keep us updated as you can. I as many others will be here to offer our support and help for you and Max. |
I am so sorry |
Our Prayers Are With You !! Lily send hugs. Hang in there ! |
I know there isn't much anyone can say to make you feel better and my heart is aching for you so I'm going to pray your boy is found to have a minor problem that's easily corrected. |
Tyra, I already posted these links in your other thread but if you go to the DogAware link...... DogAware.com Health: Tests used to Diagnose Kidney Disease in Dogs ......it explains other things to test for that can effect the kidneys which may/could be treatable that should be ruled out before jumping to the conclusion that this is renal disease..... Good luck and I wish you well.... |
My heart truly goes out to you. I am in a similar position with a young dog having a very devastating illness. I cry just looking at her everyday. She is the best dog and I absolutely know how you feel. I hope that there is a good outcome and maybe a miracle in your future. Hugs..Jackie |

2 Attachment(s) Tyra, I'm so sorry.. This won't help you one bit, but I know exactly what you're going through right now. My little best buddy in the world, Woodie has been suffering from an elevate calcium level since the middle of last month, that we know of, and has caused a degree of renal failure too. He's five years old and I am way overly attached and it's killing me too, so I know exactly how you must feel. Woodie's BUN has only been as high as 135 so far, and his creatinine has been up to 2.3 We've done the IV, for days, pumping fluids through him to get the calcium down, and thought we were going to be ok for a while. Last Friday though, I found out it's going back up. Grrrrrrrrrrr. The specialist and two vets all say that it's either a parathyroid problem, or there is some cancer hiding somewhere in Woodie's body causing all these problems. Good luck with your little furrball, I hope the best for you Tyra! Chris |
