my new puppy has gardia!!! she was diagnosed with gardia today!! ahh i'm freaking out right now, is it possible for my other dog to have it?!?!? please someone have answers for that. |
Giardia can be serious, but is usually very treatable. Make sure she gets the necessary treatment to get rid of it. I've had it personally and in humans I know it can take several courses of antibiotics to completely eradicate it. Yes, other dogs can catch it via poop, but it's not terribly likely. That said, if your dogs have all been spending a lot of time together, I would have the other dogs tested, just in case. |
Try not to freak out it is very treatable. When I took in a foster puppy last year she had giardia. I didn't know when I took her in that she had it so I let her by my 3 yorkies. I was just careful to clean really good wherever she went poop and none of mine caught it. They played and napped together. Once she was on the medicine she cleared up within the week. It is not that uncommon in puppies. |
okay okay, she is pooping on paper but i do pick it up right away.. im just scared.. i dont want my other dog to get it. am i supposed to clean or disinfect anything? i researched it on google and its saying i have to use bleach or something.. |
I mixed a spray bottle with water and bleach and cleaned the area with that. Mine was a puppy mill puppy rescue who wasn't potty trained so she had a few accidents. It is scary when you have another dog in the house but I think he/she will be fine. |

Keep the puppy paws and little bottom clean. If the baby is using the pad to potty, it is much easier to kill things clean. My last baby had it when we got her too. Mine go outside and I pick up immediately. Needless to say, even after picking up the parasite can live in the ground for two months. After I learned this, I was picking up poop and pouring bleach water on each spot (three dogs). The pad is easier because it can be picked up with (hopefully) no leakage underneath. It can spread to the others though if your baby has a trace on paws/bottom and comes in contact with the other dogs. Good luck!!! |

I had a little foster Yorkie who came to me thru an unreputable rescue group who specialized in large breed dogs. This despicable rescue group did not protect their outdoor water sources as well as keep their flea & tic population under control. This poor little pup came to me with tic's hanging even off of her eyelids! What was worse, they not only knew about her Tic infestation but, knowingly exposed my Yorkies as well to Giardia after being warned by their local Humane Society that they contacted after they reported her symptoms of diarrhea. Long story short...each of my three own Yorkies became infected with Giardia! So, is it easily spread? YES! Why? Because, my Bella loves to eat poop and then drank from the communal water bowl! |
Did you see where your new puppy came from? Giardia is spread through contaminated water and unsanitary kennel conditions. Unfortunately, it can easily spread to your other dog and they can reinfect one another. Disinfecting the environment is very important. Giardia canis in Dogs |
okay how do i "disinfect" the area, she's been running around my bedroom and in her den..what can i do.please help... :( a steam cleaner wont do?? |
and also..this little bugger likes to eat her own stool... err i've never been so stressed with a puppy EVER. SNICKERS NEVER HAD THESE PROBLEMS. I seriously want to rip my hair out right now. i've been giving her pineapple yet she is till eating it, can she "REINFECT" herself with gardia? do you guys know? thanks. |

oh man..this is going to be hard. it is going to be almost impossible to "disinfect" the area and keep them away for "days" where else am i going to put them? my whole entire house is carpet except for the kitchen. and my 7.5 yorkie can jump over the fence that we have that keeps my puppy in.. another question i have is, when do i start disinfecting? just right away? I have started the giardia treatment with lotus today..planning on taking snickers to the vet tomorrow to have his stool examined to make sure he hasnt gotten it from her. |
The little foster pom I had with the giardia had been all over my carpeted house, bed, back yard and drank from the same water bowl. None of them caught it. I got her on medicine as soon as the shelter did the test and it was positive. But she still had been with me for a few days before that.I just used the bleach solution inside and out where ever she pooped. It is treatable so even if the worse were to happen you can treat your other baby. You can probably just take a stool sample in from Snickers to have it tested. |

Did you use the bleach solution on the carpet?? is that what you did? i am hoping my situation will be the same as yours, i would just die if my other baby had it.. she has had a few accidents (poop) in the house away from her potty pads. she even had diarrhea.. thats when i took her in and they found positive in her stool sample |
i also realized.. i cant use "bleach" on my apartment carpet, it will change the color! and then bam..my apartment managers will charge me an arm and a leg for the carpet when i move out..what else can i use that will kill giardia? |

I sounds like quaternary ammonium compounds are the best for killing giardia in the environmental. This is used by many vets. Your dogs will have to be shampooed regularly to kill the cysts, too. Giardia can be transmitted to humans so be very careful. Frequent handwashing is very important, especially after you have handled the dogs or cleaned up after them. You will have to keep her off the carpet and on hard washable surfaces only. Pfizer Animal Health Cats Health Management Roccal-D Plus Roccal-D Plus Pfizer Animal Health (Farm Supplies - Equipment Supplies - Miscellaneous - Disinfecta |
wow that thing is like 115 bucks... well i have some pine sol i was going to use on the carpet, i am hoping that will work... i am going to quarantine her in the bathroom..(she is going to whine) its not going to be pleasant. i am also going to steam clean my whole house..(thank god my apartment is small, it is going to be rather wet...until dry..i'm hoping that doesnt make the "cysts" worse. I am 75% sure right now that my other dog has gotten it..i took him out to go poop today..and it smelled kinda bad..and was a little bit "greasy" looking. (unless its because ive been mixing their food raw/kibble/canned) hopefully that is the case.. i guess i better take him the vet to be safe than sorry. as for where the puppy came from, i got her from a breeder. but i am beginning to question how reputable this breeder is. I did see the place, it wasnt bad.. but it wasnt the greatest either i am just going to put that behind me and go with my gut right now that she isnt. either way, i've got lotus now.. and its my responsibility to take care of her and my other dog... :( i feel so bad for her..and my baby snickers.. i feel terrible for putting him through this. i am so stressed out.. this is worse than fleas..i feel like crying right now.:(:(:(:(:( |
will a steam cleaner be effective at all?!?! i'm about to do that tonight... |
