Nervous 9wk old puppy sick :( I'm really nervous. My 9 week old puppy started coughing this evening. Sounds like kennel cough. I read it's dangerous in young puppies, could result in death. Right now he still playful, but has this awful hacking honk like cough. He's wrenching a lot too. I noticed he didn't eat as much today. I have an appt with the vet tomorrow afternoon but I know I will Be a basketcase til then. Just wanna hear abt others whose young pups had kennel cough too, how long will my baby be sick? How sick could he get. What can I do to help him? I've had a few dogs over the years, but none have ever got sick..so I'm not used to this. |
That's great that you have an appointment already for the vet in the afternoon. Your little guy is very young to have left his momma and littermates at only 9 weeks old. How long have you had him? You need to contact your breeder to let them know that he is sick. Please check back and let us know how he is doing. He sure is adorable. :) |
Please make sure you get him in to see a vet in the A.M. as it can turn into pneumonia in the blink of an eye. It can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to clear up, it just depends on the dog and if they get treatment in a timely manner. |
Got him at 8 weeks, I thought so too but was assured it would be fine to take him that young. Yea we decided were gonna take him in the morning. Thank god my bf has off tomorrow. Poor little guy has me a nervous wreck, can't sleep. Can't believe how much I love him only after a week! I read up. They said the recoup period could take a while, he seems very healthy otherwise so I know he can fight it. I had him already scheduled just to get his vet check up tomorrow. But I don't want to wait til the afternoon now :( Thx guyz |

I am glad you are getting him to a vet this morning. When I brought Cali home at 9 weeks she had kennel cough and gave it to my older pom. They were on antibiotics for 2 rounds to help prevent it going into a bacterial infection. It took 3 months for both of them to get over it completely. I just had them checked by my vet a few times to make sure it hadn't gone in to pneumonia. I also would watch for signs of hypoglycemia (low sugar). Cali had a few of them since she also had coccidia which along with the kennel cough, her age and not wanting to eat made her more prone to it. I hope your baby feels better soon. |
Your little dear is SO cute!!! I do hope he is feeling better soon!!!! Brodie and I will be thinking of him :) |
Ok. The vet says it's prolly kennel cough. Throat culture will take a week ti verify He gave us a antibiotic But he isn't concerned, we caught it fast. He's still playful and eating. The breeder was a idiot called him. He said it's common n cold weather for puppies to get a cold no need to worry or go to worry. Rigghhhhtt. Told her she's footing the bill! Hope he gets better fast. Thx guyz, appreciate the help. I was a nervous wreck. Still worried. :( |
So glad you got to the vet today. Be sure to keep an eye on him & if he seems worse at all , get him back to the vet asap. |

I hope Riley will feel better very soon!:animal36 He's as cute as a button and I love the name Riley, too!;) |
Both my Yorkie Zach and my Shorkie Zoe had kennel cough when we first got them. It took a few weeks for it go away. Now they are both fine. I wouldn't worry too much being that he's under a vets care. It sounds bad but if you follow your vet's instructions he should be okay. |
