Woke up to Max with blood oozing from tail?! I woke up this morning and there was a blood stain on the dog bed. I thought it was from my rat terrier, Poochi, who has a cold. But when I was walking Max (the yorkie) this morning I noticed he had blood stains under his tail. I picked him up to take a better look and it looks like there's a bloody gash and scab under his tail but his stool is fine and he himself is fine running around like an insane dog (typical Max behavior). Is this normal? His tail is docked but he got it docked 3 years ago. He also scratches himself on the furniture like a cat, rubbing himself like crazy and I thought it was just dry skin. What should I do? |
 hiya i am sorry your baby is unwell :( i dont have any idea what the problem is  but i would go to the vet asap , good luck , hope everything is ok , love jill n poppy xx:aimeeyork |
Is the bloody gash right under his tail or closer to his anus? If it is right under the tail, it could be an injury of some kind. If it is closer to his anus, it could be a ruptured anal gland, in which case he should be seen by the vet ASAP. |
ruptured anal gland? 1 Attachment(s) I have no idea if its close to his anus or not. right now its all covered with dry blood and its hard to tell. I'm going to bathe him now and get a better look. however, if its a ruptured anal gland wouldn't it look like a small puncture? I attached a current pic of the "situation" |
I hope Max is OK. Could he have chewed on the area and cut himself? |
It goes kind of look like a ruptures anal gland but of course this is the internet and I am not a vet. He really needs to be taken to the vet today. Please let us know how he is doing and what they say. |
I think you should take him to the vet today, this could be something serious as others have said. I would not wait. Luckily since you are in the Miami area you should be able to find a vet open today to see him. Keep us posted. |
I hope you see a vet today and are able to determine what is wrong. Sending good wishes Max's way and looking forward to your update. |
I agree with the others, go see a vet, this could be extremely serious if the anal glands are infected. Prompt action could save his life. |
Max update 1 Attachment(s) First of all thank you all for your replies. Its good to be able to reach out. I bathed Max and have attached an updated picture of what the "situation" now looks like. It looks like he has a little scab below his anus but not right next to it. From what I have read about anal gland ruptures there are 2 prior stages before it just ruptures. One of the symptoms is that the dog strains to poop and he has never had a problem pooping and in fact pooped this morning with the bloody butt without a problem. I'm actually living in Chicago (have to update my profile) and my vet and other local vets appear to be closed today. I put some skin relief lotion and am going to buy some Neosporin to put on as well and cover the area so he doesn't nibble on it. If it's still bad tomorrow, I'm going to take him to the vet. Let me know what you think it might be with this new picture. |
If you have an e-collar to put on him so that he doesn't lick and ingest the topical ointments, that would be good. Otherwise, supervise closely. The spot does appear to be well below the anus. Hard to say from a photograph what the cause could be. I would have the vet take a look at it tomorrow. |
Thank you all for your responses. Max is wearing a cloth diaper (made by old shirt) and is frolicking around like he usually does. I know some of you feel strongly about me taking him to the doctor today (not that any vets are open near me anyway) but I am confident it is not an anal gland rupture. According to someone who experienced an anal gland rupture with her dog: If her anal gland has ruptured then she will be in a tremendous amount of pain and the area will be leaking and that stuff that comes out will stain smell wise what ever it touches. Max isn't in any pain, doesn't mind if I poke the scab below his butt, and there's nothing leaking, swollen or stinky. |

Here is a list of vets in your area. There are several that are open today. Even the Banfield inside of Petsmart (not a fan but sure would use it in a pinch) is open until 6 pm today. Find a Veterinarian - Local Vets and Veterinary Clinics, Vet Services |
I don't think you should wait either. Hopefully, you are able to find a vet to get him into. I would have for this to get infected. Not "knowing" what it is or what caused it would scare me. Good Luck and please keep us updated. |
Nikki had something almost identical and it was a ruptured anal gland. I took him to my vet that day and they had to clean out the anal gland and instill antibiotics in there and gave him an oral antibiotic and pain meds. I had to take him back within a week for another treatment. He healed up nicely, but it is important to get them in as soon as you see it. I was told it is more common in males. My sons male had the same thing a couple of months ago. I hope you got Max in and he heals quickly |
This deff looks like a ruptured anal gland. If the gland ruptured outdoors or while you were not actually looking at the dog when it ruptured you would not always know that it happened. Some dogs do not show signs of constipation before a rupture and as far as smell, she probably cleaned herself up before you ever noticed it. If you don't get her to the vet & on antibiotics to clear up the infection it will start to fill up again & rupture again. Also most likely since this one ruptured the other is more then likely very full & possibly infected as well. |
Also after the gland ruptures the pressure has been released so it's not always so painful. One thing you can do is warm compresses & keep the area clean & keep the scab moist till you can get to the vet. This will allow it to continue to drain & not fill up . If you can get it moist enough to remove the scab it would be best. However this is only temporary and your baby should see a vet ASAP. |
I have a little story for you. I was grooming my little shih tzu when she was only a puppy. She had a matt , her coat is cotton. I figured I could snipped the matt out . However the scissors got too close to her skin and I hurt her. SHe did not bleed at all , and was not sure what to do, it was a clean cut. My brother came over and looked at the injury and told me it was worse then I thought. I took my baby to the after hours vet hospital, and was told she needed to be stitched up, and under anethesia. I cried my eyes out, thinking I hurt my little pup , and felt so much guilt. I do not have too much money, and borrowed money aganist myself to pay for the expenses. She stayed overnight . I am trying to let you know that even though it does not look serious to you only a vet can know and treat propperly. Yes, it was expensive , but the wound was not going to heal itself. Please take your Max to the vet. Just to make sure he is ok , and for your peace of mind. |
I hope you get Max to the vet today and please give us an update. You might want to mention he's itching like crazy, as this is not normal either. It could be a reaction to his food, dogs can develop allergies overnight, or it could be the shampoo and conditioner you are using, or simply not rinsing well enough. Remember you should use a condition or cream rinse as this conditions the skin as well as the hair. |

Wondering if this baby got to see a vet today ? I know you said you are confident that it's not an anal, Hmmm from what I saw I am confident that it IS an anal. You also mentioned that your other dog has a cold ? have you had that one to a vet ? FYI, Doggie colds can turn into pneumonia quickly. |
Well, I can't say if it's an anal gland rupture, or an abcess, but I can tell you that that hole is not, in any way, shape, or form, a normal part of any dog's anatomy. The skin around it looks irritated, and swollen, and the skin damage is causing some hair loss. Using products made for humans on a wound/injury such as this is never a good idea... he will more than likely need to go on oral antibiotics or risk a systemic infection, which can be potentially fatal. Abcesses, ruptures and puncture wounds are normally left uncovered and allowed to drain as they heal. Bandaging the area will set up an evironment perfect for further infection. Many times, surgery is necessary to install a rubber drain in the direct area to keep the wound open and draining, and to allow for daily cleansing as the wound/injury is allowed to heal from the inside out. If the outside heals first, that would trap infection inside causing another event to occur... or systemic infection as the bacteria will get into the pup's bloodstream and travel throughout his body.. |
Any updates? |
I guess we are all waiting for updates. I just want to say that virtually all major cities and even a lot of rural areas have vet clinics with after hours and weekend care. Ours is 30 miles away, but the peace of mind is worth the drive and the added expense. |
