Vaporizer? Is it safe to use a vaporizer for a dog? Yesterday our son's large, mixed breed dog started coughing and sounds congested. Is it safe to use a vaporizer and if so is it safe to use anything in the vaporizer? We don't have an emergency vet here so we'd like to find something that might help her until they can get her in on Monday. |
When my dogs had kennel cough a few years ago I asked the vet and she said not to use one. I just steamed the bathroom and put them in there. I can't remember why she said not to use it though. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this will respond. Hope she feels better soon. |
I used a cool mist vaporizer when Rhett had pneumonia. I like them better than the heated ones because there's no risk of burns. |
In the winter when the house is dry, sometimes it bothers Barney. I run hot water in bathroom and drop 1-3 drops of certified organic essential oil of peppermint in the sink and the cooling peppermint steam really helps. |

When Peek a Boo had pneumonia last year, the vet said to put him in a steamed up bathroom for 10-15 minutes, no longer, 3-4 times a day. That said, running a vaporizer non stop may not be good. Vicks is toxic to dogs... a tiny bit here and there won't hurt, but extended exposure could be dangerous... there's a following that believe Vicks can actually cause more congestion.... |
Turns out it was just a little cold...not pneumonia...Li' Bit is fine now and back to her old self. |
That's good news!! |
Thank you and, yes, it is good news...Lil' bit is the best one of the 3 they have in my opinion...I'd take her home in a flat second if I thought I'd get away with it! She's just a big mixed breed...white feet, chin and belly and the rest of her is gold and black brindle...she has a long skinny tail that hits you like a whip and she can jump an 8 foot privacy fence with no effort at all...she is always happy and has an amazing smile. We've never figured out what she is but with the way she can run and jump I think there may be some greyhound in there! |
