Woodie may have Addison's Disease My little furr ball, best buddy has been sick since about the 14th of December when he stopped eating. Numerous trips to the vet, different tests, x-rays, medications, antibiotics, days on an IV,,,,,, He's only five years old, and watching him suffer is tearing my heart out. It's been quite the roller coaster ride for the last few weeks. Bloodwork looked like maybe kidney failure. He acts like it's hurting him to breathe normal. He's thrown up, drank water like crazy, started eating, stopped eating, it's driving us nuts. We had him to specialists in Houston twice now, spent tons of money, and still know nothing for sure. Anybody have a crystal ball? That's what I need. His bloodwork is looking much better, but now he acts like it's hard for him to breath. He's not half the dog we had five weeks ago. It's sure tough not knowing if we should keep trying to help him, or if we're only prolonging the inevitable. Any of you had a dog with Addison's where the pet had problems breathing? Thanks for reading my problems.......:aimeeyork |
I'm sorry I don't have any useful information for you, but I'll say a prayer for your pup. |

I'm so sorry you're going thru this :(. If I had that crystal ball right now for you, it'd be yours. So, do the specialists (are they Internists, btw) feel sure it's Addisons? If yes, do his symptoms get relief when you give steroids? Do the steroids take time to titer correctly? My Wylie has Cushings Disease...which is sort of like the opposite of Addisons. For Cushings, the goal is to bring cortisol down; in Addisons, the goal is to bring the cortisol up. And when Cushings is first diagnosed, it can take about 1-1.5 years to get the meds titrated correctly (takes a lot of finesse). So, that's why I'm asking if the specialists told you the meds take some time to reach the right level...? His lungs sound clear and everything, when they listened to them? It's so scary when they're sick, you feel so helpless. Please know I'm thinking of your kiddo and hoping for a very quick resolution. |

Woodie is adorable. I'm praying for you and Woodie. I hope the vet will have Woodie on the road to recovery very soon. Hang in there!! |
I can't advise you, but I can tell you I'm sorry your lil guy is sick. Have you done any research on Addison's to see if breathing difficulty might be part of it? I suppose it's possible (I don't really know) that the breathing problem might be a side effect of the medication? Just a stab in the dark here. |
Well, I found out today that Woodie tested negative for Addison's. That would be good, except the fact that no one seems to be able to figure out what has made him so sick for the last month. On the positive side, he's been acting like he wants to be around since Sunday afternoon. Maybe he's gonna be alright after all. Got my fingers crossed. |
Glad to hear Woodie is better! I have had wonderful experience with Ingleside Animal Clinic in Ingleside, Tx. Not too far from Victoria. I am in Port A. Dr Broussard will make himself available at any time!! This means so much when your baby is suffering and you are worried. He has also NEVER given up on my babies! He uses common sense and compassion along with his vet knowledge! Just did not sound like you got much info or support from the specialist and thought maybe could help your Woodie if needed. |
I am so sorry you have had such a sick little pupster. He is adorable! Curious...did you go to Gulf Coast in Houston? |
So sorry your baby Woodie is not well. I will be praying for him and you. BTW He sure is a cutie!!!:) |
I hope you can get this figured out. Woodie is a darling little guy! And too young to be so sick. You mention he is having breathing problems, but not what exactly the problem is. Is he breathing rapidly? Labored? If his respirations are more that 30/min, I would take him to an emergency clinic. That is what the internist for one of my dogs told me. At more than that, he may not be getting enough oxygen and the level could drop to a dangerously low level. Does his breathing problem sound like it is in his throat, or lungs. Could this just be a problem he is having in addition to his original problem or has he had the problem all along? My thoughts are with Woodie. I know how hard this is to handle. |
I'm sorry. I hope they can get it figured out. it is very hard trying to figure out if you are doing the right think by keeping them alive when they are suffering. My heart goes out to you. |
