Posted 01-03-2011 at 07:10 PM by gizmoto Hi, This is my first time blogging in hopes to find some answers to my Yorkie's strange condition that he has developed these past couple of months. To set some history on my Yorkie. His name is Gizmo, a pure breed, turning 3 years of in March 2011 and was about 9 lbs before he became sick. About 3 months ago Gizmo became very ill with strange symptoms. He would foam and drool excessively at the month and walk around aimlessly everywhere and becoming very weak. He's very uncoordinated and acts as if he's drunk. Gizmo would eat and drink normally but very little. The Vet took a blood test and urine samples but everything came out normal, so he ruled out liver problems. Doc said to just have him rest up and see what happens. The symptoms went away after a couple of days but started reoccurring every week or so. NOW its reoccurring every couple days... Gizmo is about 7lbs now, he has lost 2 pounds since he's been sick. Please if anyone has experienced the same symptoms with their Yorkie please comment. Thank you, Gizmo/L |

Sounds like he needs to return to the vet. The symptoms are increasing in frequency and getting worse so 'resting up' apparently did not do it. I would second the bile acids test if not already done; the symptoms certainly sound similar to liver shunt; but also could be a lot of other things. Can you tell us what tests were done? |
My Sammy had a disc problem that had him walking like he was drunk. The vet prescribed Gabapentin (Neuronton) and thank goodness he is doing well. He had lost a pound in three months time. He's also using a harness instead of a collar and I raised his dishes up on a two by four so he doesn't have to put his head down to eat and drink. Also no jumping, no stairs. Have they mentioned that it could be neurological too?? I think you have to go in and have more tests run to determine what type of problem this is. I know it is scary when your little one is sick and they can't tell you what is wrong with them. Good Luck, I'm sending you positive vibes and hugs. |
