He was fixed yesterday but... Hew ont stop licking it I have kept an eye on him and when he starts too I tell him no and he stops but he keeps trying. What do I do? What happens if he keeps licking it. I will be gone tonight for a few hours, what do I do so he wont lick himself when I am at work. Astro is already back to normal and Cosmo isn't he will get up and walk then hurry up and sit back down, poor guy. Any suggestions on how to make him feel better? |
Well, there are those E collars, i believe they're called. They keep them from licking their wounds. Petco usually has some! :) |
You are right megan , the collar is called Elizabethan Collar |
we dont have a petco around here. we have a petsmart but it is about 30 minutes one way and I can make it there and back before I have to go to work. :( |
Vets have them. Do you think you could get one from your vet? |
why didnt the vet give you one to take home? lexi is getting fixed on friday, i hope they give me one...or i'l have a fit |

I've seen them at Petsmart. I would have thought that the vet would have given you one. |
Staci, Call Laura. If he had internal stitches like Kacee, she told me it is OK for her to lick it - that she will take care of it. And that is what happened. :) |
Oh! She also said it would be OK to give her a baby aspirin, but it was never necessary. |
I called my vet about Logan licking his incision after surgery and she said that it wasn't a big deal. The stitches are internal so he can't pull them out and there isn't a problem with infection. She did however tell me the antibacterial spray they put on after might upset his tummy so if I see him doing it I should just say no. After a day or two he didn't bother it anymore. I would just try that. Or call your vet and see what they recommend. With internal stitches and glue they don't use E collars much anymore. |

His stitches are internal and she doesn't need an e-collar. :) |
My vet gave us a cream that tastes bad and keeps them from licking there you might ask your vet if he has that. |
I dont think it would hurt to let him lick it a little but you dont want him chewing at it. do you have any panties that he could wear while your away? |
Just make one! Cut a circle out of cardboard - pretty wide - the a circle out of the middle for his neck, slice into the middle - put it on him and tape it! Duct tape is wonderful! The idea is to put something between his head and body so he can't get to the stitches. Doesn't have to be perfect - just has to work. Check for them online and you'll see what they look like and just go for it. I've made them for puppies and dogs. |
She and I have the same vet. She uses internal stitches and there is no need for e-collars. Those are for use with vets who use the outdated method of external stitches. She said the pets will take care of their incision. She's a very good vet. Actually, an excellent one... ;) |
I put a onsie on him when I went to work. I called the vte and she said that he would try to lick them but dont let him bite at it and try to get them out. I just fell soo bad for him because I can tell he is in pain :( . He also had soem baby teeth pulled and he is eating very well even the dry dog food. |
Kacee said she's sorry Cosmo is hurting. She sends kisses to make him feel better. :p Give him another day or so and he'll feel better. Kacee is still licking her incision, but I think she has just about accomplished what Laura said she would by licking it and that is to dissolve the knotted thread. That's a good thing, because when you rub your hand over that spot it won't catch and hurt. :) |
He is doing better playing with Astro now. I miss his crazy hyperness, lol. (never thought I would say that, hehe). |
I'm glad he's a little better. That's the way it is. They keep getting better and better and before you know it they are just like always. I know what you mean when you say you miss his usual behavior. I'm the same. You want your regular little guy back! :D |
This is the type of situation that calls for Tea Tree Oil...Or mamaleuca. It is a mild astringent AND the dogs will not lick it. I just put a wee bit along the incision on both sides and voila! no licking.. |
No he is acting strange again. He always has his butt on the floor when he runs he runs fast an hurries up and sits down, or tries to bury himself under blankets or something, whats up with. Should I be worried? |
It sounds familiar. Kacee sorta did that for awhile. He just hurts. After all, they sliced him up! If you'd ever had major abdominal surgery yourself you'd understand. :D Just try to keep him reasonably calm and no jumping. |
he had to get some ointment for it, it is swelling a little becuase he wont leave it alone poor guy. All Astro wants to do is play and Cosmo is not up for it now, he does every once in awhile. |
He must really have been going after it. Laura just told me that Kacee would take care of it and she did. So far...I wish I could be there and hold him. :) |
