Izzy jumped off couch and landed hard
 

We have a new baby (21 weeks old) she weighs 3 pounds. We have had her home with us for 2 weeks. Most of the time she is laying on the couch with us or out running around in the yard with my daughter. Today I got up from the couch and didn't realize she was following me and she jumped off of the couch. We have stained concrete floors and she landed with a thump, it looked like she may have hit the side of her head. I immediately picked her up and she is acting fine. She is running around outside like normal and is sleeping like normal. I am concerned and want to know what I should be watching for. As I said, she is acting normal but want to ensure that nothing is wrong. I will CERTAINLY not assume she is going to stay on the couch any longer when I get up. Thank you very much.

Hopefully she is ok; but I am going to share a story with you that happened to one of my pups in 2004. He walked off of a bed...did not jump, was walking and just stepped off. I picked him up immediately and he seemed to be just fine. A few days later, I noticed that his right front foot was slipping on my floor. It did not connect that this was possibly neurological. I thought maybe the hair on the pad of his foot needed to be clipped and so I took care of that. Next he went from that to full on quadriparesis. He was unable to even stand up .. thankfully he had deep pain reflex and also had control of his bladder and bowels. He had herniated two cervical discs and was admitted to Texas A&M for surgery. He recovered well after the surgery and physical therapy. If this had progressed any further the damage would have been permanent.
In your case, you also have the issue of your pup's head. Something like that can be deadly and sudden.
I would not waste a minute ... I would take her to a vet today...an emergency vet most likely since it is a holiday. She needs to have an exam that should include a neuro check. Always better to be safe than sorry. Just my two cents.

Thank you very much, I did call our vet and she said that it sounded like she didn't need to see her, to keep an eye on her. That's why I was asking what you all suggested we keep an eye out for.

I would say any changes at all! Behavior....ambulation...look for signs of confusion, being off balance...mood changes. Here, maybe this link will help you:

Thank you all very much, she is acting normal and will keep a close eye on her. Our first time to have a yorkie and she is just an angel. I feel like I have a baby again and she is such a joy.

Keep us updated! I hope she's okay! They're just like kids. Sometimes they clunk themselves and they are okay and sometimes they clunk themselves and they are not okay... hard to tell the difference with head injuries so it is good that you are keeping a close eye. She sounds like she has a wonderful, attentive, and loving family.

Thank you again.... I worry that we are spoiling her, she spends her whole time just hanging with us. Not much of it is spent walking around, my husband keeps saying "she is never going to walk" we carry her all over the place. We should probably let her down on the floor more. We have always had large dogs and this is our first yorkie. Is that pretty normal behaviour for yorkies, just enjoying being held all the time? Thank you all very much, can't tell you what a great help you have been. This is our first yorkie, always had large breed dogs. Question everything I'm doing;) For the most part she is in our laps or being carried everywhere, my husband keeps saying she's never going to walk. When we take her outside she loves to run and play but once inside she is most content and comfortable in your lap or being held. When we put her down she just stands there and looks at you. I hope we aren't creating a monster, is this normal behaviour? Thank you all again..... learning a great deal.

I hope she is okay! This is my first yorkie baby too and I carry him everywhere! My in-laws joke that he doesn't have legs. I think for the most part they enjoy being held and cuddled. They are for sure lap dogs :-). I hope your little one is fine I know it can be scary when they get hurt.

Just saw this, glad to hear your girlie appears to be fine. Zhoie is my first yorkie, she will be 2yrs in Jan. 25th and it's amazing how they are so much like babies. You look at that little face and you just gotta love them to pieces. Zhoie is a lap or snuggle next to you kinda girl too. She also likes the carry me thing, lol.
