Sick and Shivering Last Friday I came home and Apple was shaking like crazy; like she was freezing. But, since I live in Texas and it is still 80 degrees outside I know that she was not cold. She shaked like this for 4 hrs and she would not let me put her down. She was laying on me shaking and then all the sudden yelped in pain. Also, she had not eaten or drank anything all day. I couldn't find what made her yelp so I took her to the vet. The vet did blood test and could not find anything. I noticed that the week preceiving this Apple seemed constipated. Usually she poops in the morning and the evening and the last week she only pooped once a day if that. So the vet told us that the bacteria in her intestines could have built up causing her a tummy ache. She is feeling better now but I was wondering if this happens to any of ya'lls babies? How can I help her when she gets constipated? Please Help! |
I never had a consipated dog so I never tried this but I heard you can give your dog canned pumpkin to help with consipation. |
I have never had a constipated pup before either but I have heard that wet dog food causes their bowels to loosen up some. |
How old is she and how much does she weigh ? You are aware of Hypoglycemia ? The shaking would scare me - Have you called the vet ? IF it were me - I would call your vet asap and tell them what she's doing ...maybe try some Nutrical and make sure she has Plenty of Water ? Pedialite is better and if she won't drink - use a syringe to make her drink - I hope she's going to be ok - but I would make that call and let her vet know what's happening with her - |
I agree with Villette-that sounded more like a hypoglycemic episode. NUTRICAL is wonderful and you need to have it on hand all the time. You get it at any petstore near the vitamins and such. It comes in a tube with a flip cap, kind of like toothpaste. Just squeeze it out and let the puppy lick it off the cap. A few licks will do it. Mine love the stuff. You may have to put it on her tongue with your finger at first. It will also loosen the poops a bit too because it has an oil (lipid) base so that the sugar can be utilized in the blood stream faster. If you are in a pinch without any Nutrical, Karo syrup (put it on her tongue with your finger) or even maple syrup-something that is liquid sugar is what she needs in a hurry. Read all you can about hypoglycemia in dogs so you know what to look for and can act fast. It could save her life......there! Did I sound like a Public Service Announcement?? It's the nurse in me coming out...LOL |

I already took Apple to the vet. I took her on friday, the day that it happened. She is 9 months and weighs 6.9lbs. I have the Nurtical and I did give her some that nights but would hypoglyciema explain the yelps of pain? She always has plenty of water and food avable to her. Honestly it doesn't seem like a bout of hypoglycemia. Thanks for the imput. |
If he thought bacteria had built up in the intestines, then did he give her any antibiotics to clear up the bacteria? This tells about bacteria overgrowth, but your dog didn't have diarrhea did it? http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/GI...overgrowth.htm |

When I first got Deb, she was not pooping. I took her to the vet and she gave me some sort of puppy laxative/. I cant remember what it was called, but it worked after one dose, and we never had another problem! Ask your vet about it! |
Poor Baby! I am glad she is feeling better. The other morning Abbie, which is at her a lil over her 30 day mark of pregnancy - we hope for real this time -, was shaking like crazy to, but I put her sweater on her she stopped so I assumed she was cold. But also I realized the week(s) before she was constipated! hmm.. makes me wonder now. |
Thanks so much for ya'lls input. it has been very helpful. i have changed apple's diet to see if that will help. no people food at all, and half a can of ceaser's dog food. i hope that this keeps her bowles moving. we will see. |
