Please read: good to know...Remy is hospitalized
 

On Wednesday night Remy jumped off of the bed and pooped three times. He also threw up only once,but there was a lot. I thought maybe he got into something and monitored him the following day. He was fine all day Thursday but then Thursday night he wouldn't settle down in bed. He was up and down and underneath the bed all night..which he never does. He always snuggles next to me and he wouldn't come near me. Thursday night he threw up again.. I called the vet Friday and they got him in for Saturday morning. I was expecting some antibiotics and for us to be on our way. My vet comes in and touches his stomach and he starts to freak out (which he never does). After a slew of tests with barium, they think he ate something and it is stuck in his small intestine. They tell me they need to operate and perform the operation. The vet calls me back after the surgery and said he had such a bad viral infection that his lymph nodes were so swollen that they were pushing his small intestine shut. The vet told me that they lost a dog last week because the owners waited too long.
I just wanted to share this story because Remy had no signs of any infection until it got so bad it was closing his small intestine. Please keep an eye on your dogs and be sure to monitor their behavior as that was the only way I knew anything was wrong with Remy.:cry:

This is the first time I have ever had to deal with Remy being hospitalized. The vet said I could visit him today. I am just looking for your advice on if I should visit him or not. My problem is I don't want him to be excited to see me and then I still have to leave him there. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing Remy's experience. Maybe it will save another too. Thank goodness you were so alert to changes and got him to the vet when you did! It is amazing how fast these little ones can go from "maybe something is wrong" to "Oh NO this is serious!"

I would go see Remy. I think it would be good for both of you. Even though you would have to leave him again, at least he would get the idea you are somewhere nearby.

I'm so sorry for poor Remy - hope he recovers quickly.

About visiting ... You know your dog's personality better than anyone. Some dogs can probably benefit from a visit, others would get agitated when their person leaves them. I think Tallulah would be in the group for whom a visit would do more harm than good.

Perhaps you should ask the vet if he is authorizing the visit for your benefit or for Remy's. If for you, maybe you could get them to take some pics or video with your camera so you can see him without upsetting him.

Oh, and if you don't go to see him, maybe he would be comforted by something that has your scent on it, if that's allowed.

Please go visit Remy. When Sammy had his surgery for eating something that blocked his stomach, my sons and I went to visit. Our vets office has visiting hours twice a day so sometimes I went without the kids (they were in school then). It was good for me to get to hold him and I think it was good for him to see us too. He was very droopy due to the pain medication but he would curl up on my lap. I hope Remy has a speedy recovery and will be curled up on your lap soon at home!!!!

I'm sorry that happened. You are to be commended for getting him in quickly. Let us know how Remy's recovery goes and when you get to take him home again.

I went to go see him and it was definitely the right decision. He was much better than I thought he was going to be. I brought him his bed and blanket from home. He is coming home tomorrow morning.
They vet said he still has diarrhea and the virus is still coming out so I can't bring him home until tomorrow morning. Unfortunately I can't take the day off because I just started a new teaching job, but my fiance is taking off to take care of him.

I'm glad he's doing better. I know you wish you could stay home with him, but I'm sure he'll be ok. They usually get better faster at home.:)

Remy is home now and is doing much better! Aside from the 13 stiches he got and the neutering and the 7 teeth that were pulled! I have to give him wet down food one tbsp at a time and I feel like he is starving! He is 11 lbs and is used to being a free eater. Now he is only allowed 1 tbsp of gross soggy food and no treats :(

Poor guy. I will certainly say a pray for his quick recovery.:( I am so glad you have him at home with you and he is doing much better.:)

Hope Remy is fully recovered soon. How frightening for you! Do you know what he got hold of?

I was following this thread. Thank you for posting this story, I would of never imagined something like this could happen. Thank god Remy is doing much better and is home where he belongs.
