When Kasey had a seriously upset stomach and had to be re-hydrated at the vet, we were told to give her something bland like boiled chicken or hamburger. Well, I thought it would be a treat to give her boiled hamburger since she'd not had that before -- and she turned bright red, as if she had a sunburn, and became really itchy. She is allergic to beef -- and to so much else! It took me a while to find the right dog food, and to stick with it -- but now I give her ONLY her dry dog food (Artemis) and it's made a world of difference. Check out this site to evaluate some of the foods, including the one you're using: Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble I found it very helpful. Good luck! |
Update... Just wanted to let everyone know that after reading many posts the dermatologist wound up giving me the simplicef and atopica. Its only been one day so no change yet. They put her on a rabbit pres. diet can food for allergies to rule out food allergies. Also did blood work and saw she had a very slight low thyroid which she explained could weaken the immune system which would explain why the staph infection isnt responding to the numerous antibiotics given-the lab showed that the antibiotics given should be working on the particular staph but its resistant-so they are going to try simplicef. I hope it works not sure what they'll try if it doesnt. I appreciate everyone posting all their info. it really helped me I hope this info. helps someone else as well, Ill let you know what happens! |

Please keep us posted. From my experience, I think I've seen results start w/ Simplicef in within the first 4-6 days or so...and then just keeps on gettin' better! |
Thanks for the update! I am sure you will soon see some improvement! :) |
Shes better! Just wanted to update that after taking the simplecef for only 5 days, the sores started to disappear! The vet also said she has a very slight low thyroid and normally they wouldnt give meds for it. She is doing a one month test to see what the blood levels are. Bella is now on the royal canin can food(rabbit, venision) . The vet also gave me a pres.diet treat that has no allergens in it.I cant tell you how happy I am to see her not itch and bite anymore. I just hope it doesnt come back! Since the vet thinks it is a food allergy, once she ends the simplecef we'll see what happens. I wanted to let everyone know that so many people had posted info. on the simplecef and the atopica. I still dont know why my vet, or the first derm. never tried it. It would have prevented 3 months of torture! Im hoping this info. helps anyone out there-if you have similiar issues, I would demand to be given those two medications. Ive spent way over 2500.00 and put her through tests, months of medications, etc. I hope that at least I can help someone out there that may need this info. |
Thank you so much for this post...I am fostering my daughters pom and for the last week I have noticed her scratching terribly in the mornings..I am now finding hair lying around so it is time to call the vet for a check up..I have also been giving her chicken in her food due to my Yorkie joey being so picky about eating...But like you I have been doing this with her since late October....think I will be cutting this out...for both of them....glad you have found some relief for your baby.... |
My Zada is on Simplicef right now for her wheezing. They took x-rays and it showed a little bit of cronic sterile broncitis. As for poultry, mine are all very allergic to poultry of all kinds and all types of fish. We avoid those and have not had any more itching problems. |
Im glad it helped you. They may not be allergic at all to the chicken, its so weird that I have given her chicken in her food on and off for almost 5 years and never had an issue. The vet said it can just develop-she also said if they are allergic to chicken to stay away from turkey and duck products. Also read labels for treats, etc. I couldnt believe even greenies had chicken in them! Her rash is gone but boy shes not happy with me:) |

Hi there, I am sorry that we did not quickly, initially help your yorkie's skin disease! Skin diseases are often not cured on the first visit! There are many compounding factors that can contribute. Today even staph bacteria is very difficult to cure due to resistance that may not be seen on the initial culture, if she was cultured. I would be happy to repeat this at no charge, if it did not provide the appropriate antibiotic choice. Bacterial infections can also be difficult to treat with steroids on board. Often, if the skin disease started at 10 years of age with no skin problems before that, there is a hormonal issue or a food allergy, less commonly something more concerning. I am sure that I discussed this at the visit. The visits are often long (1hour plus) and I go over with you all the possibilities about what could be going on and long term plan of action. It can be a lot to digest. It is often not solved at the first visit, but takes time to treat the infection and then find the underlying cause (hormonal, allergy, etc). I care very much about my clients and patients and was very unhappy to see this posting. I wish you would have called to let me know that things weren't working. We always encourage that. I would be happy to discuss this with you further. There are other diseases with pustules/irritation that require a skin biopsy for diagnosis, but it is important to treat the infection first to get a clear biopsy specimen. Bacterial infections can also be difficult to treat with an underlying hormonal problem. If she has an allergy, once the bacterial infection has been treated she will be still itchy. It is important to know this (whether or not she is still itchy with no infection). We treat and manage these problems all the time, and every patient is different. What works for one, does not work for another. Sometimes you don't get it right the first time for sooooo many reasons, but usually we do!!! That is why we ask you to call and plan a recheck. |
