vomiting yorkie
 

Hi,

My yorkie is about 3 1/2 years old. Yesterday afternoon he started vomiting. He never vomited any food, just foamy white liquid. He did this several times of the next few hours. He was also shaking and licking his lips, so I took him to the emergency vet. This all happened at about 8-9pm.

The vet looked him over and decided to give him a shot of doggie pepcid and cerenia to keep him from vomiting. It is now 7am and he still hasn't been wanting to eat this morning. He did eat a couple of his dog food kibble but that has been it. He has been drinking water the whole time with no problem.

Should I be concerned? Other than not eating, he has not vomited, did go number 1 an hour ago. He has maily been sleeping.

I guess I am a bit overconcerned?

check your houseplants and electrical cords to make sure someone didn't nibble something he shouldn't. if no signs of damage then could be he ate something that didn't agree with him or just had a bit of an upset tummy. If he's drinking ok and doing his business then I think you should be okay. Might not hurt to do a bland diet for a couple of days just to give his tummy time to settle.

So he hasn't eaten all day except for a "puperoni" treat. When I called home (I am at work) and I was told that he just threw up again, or at least they think he did. They found vomit in another room, but it could've been from yesterday. Apparently he is beginning to act like his old self-running and jumping up on his perch which is the back of the couch so he can bark at anything that comes by the front window.

I'm sorry your baby is vomiting. Did the ER vet run any blood work? I'd steer clear of puperoni! Too high in fat and could be making matters worse. Did the ER vet suggest a bland diet or anything?

Just wondering if there is a chance he encountered a Bufo toad/frog... they only have to sniff or lick it and these things can happen..
I now live in Florida and spoken to a couple of neighbors whos pups had an incident with a toad.. I do know they are in TX???

I don't know. It's possible he could've encountered one. Someone alwways goes out with him at night. Is it possible to see one out during the day?

yes it is possible , they often burrow under the grass or come out after or during the rain... so yes quite possible.
On a website it says to flush the mouth out with running water using a hose or kitchen sink spray hose.. wipe the inside out the mouth several times using clean clothes or different corners of a towel, making sure not to use the same corner twice. Give them a 1/4 teaspoon of pepto to settle the stomach. A little peanut butter in the mouth will get rid of the poison taste from the frog. I have my own little prep kit in the kitchen for the " just incase". But happy your off to the vet.

i'd for sure talk to the vet about getting some I/D or a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice....his tummy feels sick so he prob. won't like his regular food plus he needs something easy on his tummy. it's like children we give them easy foods like mashed. potatoes or chicken soup...doggies need bland foods too..puperoni is like giving a sick child a pepporoni pizza lol :p

I think this is a GREAT IDEA, boil up some white chicken and mix with plain white rice, Id only offer little bits at a time like maybe 4-5 small meals the first couple days.

I agree, stay away from Puperoni, even when your baby returns to normal. Switch to a healthier treat and make sure that he isn't getting too much of anything in addition to his regular diet.

The vet did bloodwork and everything came back pretty normal, except it did show that he was dehydrated, which is to be expected from what he's been through for the last 24 hours.

They also did an x-ray of him (I guess he was small enough to fit under the x-ray machine) and it didn't show anything unusual.

I'll keep you posted on what happens.

The vet gave him another shot of pepcid and cerenia along with a barium swallow (as she called it). She said if over the next day he was better, then it could've just been something bad he ate. If he doesn't get better, then they would do another x-ray and see if the barium moved any in his system. If it didn't, then he probably has a blockage somewhere.

Right now he is sleeping on the couch. From what i've seen today, he seems pretty normal, except he maybe isn't as chipper as normal. Plus he is burping a lot.

And yes, he did vomit up the pupperonni. I found the evidence in my room when I got home.

Yes, i agree pupperonni is horrible for them. Most anything is bad, except for their dog food. Unfortunately, the people I live with don't think about such things. I'm sure they will when they find out how much this has all cost me so far.

i don't really understand some people. hello! Why would they give him a greasy, fatty snack after an episode like this is beyond me. About time for some education on what a dog should and should not eat.

hopefully he will be alright and whatever is bugging him will pass. Please pray that it will and that he doesn't have to have surgery or anything drastic!

Update:
Ok it has been a couple of hours. At first he rested, then he suddenly started to perk up a bit and started begging for food. I have cooked him some chicken and rice. In the meantime, he did get a hold of a few of his doggie kibble before I could get to him. That was about 45 minutes ago. Then he drank some water.

He has held it all down so far (fingers crossed). The rice is cooling and I will give him some soon.

he is now moving around a lot more and harassing me because he wants to sit in my lap while I'm on the computer! :)

That is great news! Hope your baby can hold down the food. Go easy on the rice or any food. Little at a time and wait.
