Dissolvable Stitches Poking Through 1 Attachment(s) One of Riley's stitches is poking through....They were supposed to be internal dissolvable stitches. You can feel it and see it.... It doesn't seem to be bothering him.... but last Monday when I got home from work, he had slipped out of his onsie and had apparently been licking it... It was red and swollen.... so I have been keeping him in his e-collar while I am at work because I am worried that he will start messing with it during the day and it may end up infected. [We have made it this far, with no infection.] Tomorrow will be 3-weeks, and the stitch looks the same.... Like it isn't going to dissolve and needs to be trimmed down close to the skin, or something. I called his vet office, this morning and they told me to just swing him by the office anytime and they would take a look at it. I have read that others have snipped the stitch themselves with a fingernail clipper, but would feel better having a techinician or someone more qualified than myself do it. Has anybody else had this problem? Here is a photo of him this morning, playing dead!! "Bang"!! |
Sounds familiar. Thinking it happened to Ellie too. Don't remember waht came of it though. I'd just go ahead and have them take a look because he was licking at it and they will be able to tell you if it is infected. Should be free and never hurts to have them look. |
My girls were spayed last April and they still have the dissolvable stitches that poke through from time to time. Maddie Jo had one just a week ago but it's o.k. now. I had to take them in to have them clipped off a couple months right after the spay and they told me they could poke through like that for 9 or 10 months. I wasn't too happy...I don't like to see my babies uncomfortable  Oh, and that vet has since left the practice so the new vet said there would probably be an office charge for me to bring her in to check her incision since it has been so long since their spay. Needless to say they don't go back there for care anymore...I won't pay for something they did...I feel this should still be included in the after care visits. |
I remember Kacee had one poking out for quite awhile, but it finally disappeared. |
I just got back from the vet's office... A technician took Riley back to take a look at him. He came back out and said that he looked good....and that it would dissolve on its own..... and just to continue to keep an eye on it. That is kinda what I figured.... but I thought better safe than sorry. |
I can't remember how long it took for ours to dissolve completely, but it seems like it was months. |

Yep, happened to us too. Before I knew it, they were gone. |
Yeah, that is where it is poking through and where you can actually see the stitch, is where the knot is....... |
You know I spayed my Bailey R.I.P she was 1 year old at the time and I could still feel the stitches up until the day she passed and that was just this pass Oct. so 13 yrs later and the stitches had still not dissolved. |
1 Attachment(s) Daisy was spayed at 4 months old and she just turned 10 years old this past September. She still has her spay stitches - they never dissolved. This is what they look like. (this is a side view, just taken today) Attachment 332372 |

I have had this experience myself. I had an operation on my leg last year and had dissolving stitches put in. Some of the stitch was poking through the skin and didnt dissolve, the nurse trimmed it down to the skin and everything was fine. Good luck. |
Update on riley's stitches!! Riley was neutered on November 12th. About a month later, one of his stitches was poking through. I could see it..... He started licking it so I had to use the e-collar on him during the day while I was at work. I took him back to the vet and the technician said it was where they had knotted the stitch and it should dissolve and he should be fine. Well, last Thurs. he was licking at it, Again, almost 2-months later and it was a little bloody..... I took him on Sat. to get his nails trimmed and asked them to look at his sutures, again. The tech came back out and said the stitches had not dissolved like they were supposed to so it was a bit of a reaction. The Dr. went ahead and removed the stitches that were left. I used the onsie on him sat. & sun. night and used the e-collar on him, today. - He should be able to fully heal, now!! P.S. He weighed in at 7pounds 3 ounces.... at 8 1/2 months old. :) |
I'm glad he had the stitches removed and I'm sure he'll feel much better now! I've had my own issues with dissolvable stitches not dissolving! I had surgery to remove a spot from the middle of the bottom of my foot last spring, and a couple of months later it was still very painful and a large pus-filled lump grew there! I summoned up all my courage and poked it with a thumbtack (I didn't want to go back to a doctor lol!) and then I saw a little black thread in there, so I grabbed some tweezers and pulled it out. It healed perfectly and hasn't hurt since :D |
