My heart is so very sad My Gilmore who is my 10 month old shih tzu was running on Sunday and all of a sudden he was screaming and holding his leg up. Thanks to forums like these I was thinking it was a luxiating patella. He seemed to be able to walk it off eventually. The next day he was just walking and it happened again. The screaming in pain was horrible. I swear it made me physically sick watching him suffer. We went to the vet who put him on anti inflammatory meds and a pain killer and told me to crate rest him for 10 days. She said she thought it was a luxiating patella and wanted to do sedated xrays today. It happened again twice yesterday and I can't bear to watch him suffer so we took him to the animal hospital. The doctor we saw basically said all they would do is keep him comfortable till today so if we could do the same to take him home and bring him in today to talk to a surgeon. I am so sad and I can't stop crying. I never wanted a second dog. I was very happy with Skittles my 4 year old Yorkie Poo. My husband and daughter begged me for years. I never in my wildest dreams imagined how over the moon attached I would be to him. |
I'm so sorry your baby is in pain. My Lucy has luxating patella; but I have never heard her scream in pain like that. I hope you can keep him comfortable until you can get to the surgeon. |
I am sorry, too, about your baby. I honestly have never heard of a pup screaming from LP. If I were you, I would have a board certified surgeon evaluate her. Good luck! |
Sorry to hear about Gilmore... My baby has LP but I've never heard him screaming or crying. We were given some painkillers for him just in case he's in pain but all he does is lifting his leg. We were worried if it's caused by any leg injuries but the vet told us it's usually a genetic problem small breed dogs have. |
Dogs with luxating patellas are prone to ACL tears. That could be causing his pain. Poor Gilmore. Let us know how the vet appointment goes. |
Gilmore had surgery for his patella on Friday. He came home yesterday. He is able to walk pretty good on his leg but is restricted to crate rest for the next three months. He is hating his e collar and can barely move in the crate but the bigger crate gives him too much room and he is standing up on his hind legs which they said it not good for his recovery. We are only allowed to let him walk for potty breaks but no running jumping or playing for 3 months. I know that is a small time in the life of a dog but its very stressful. I don't know if he is crying in the crate because he needs to potty or because he wants out. He shakes when he is outside. I feel so bad for him. He has not pooped but I am afraid to give him some pumpkin because the last time I did that he was going non stop for three days. It was horrible. They told me to get him an herbal sedative called composure to help him relax in the crate but he will not eat it and I don't know if I want to force him. I've already had to force him to take his pills and he has a lot of those. Normally he will takes pills no problem wrapped in cheese but this morning he just kept spitting them out. I'm going to need an herbal sedative for myself . Maybe I should try his. LOL LOL |

Ahh, poor Gilmore, hope he has a speedy recovery. Sorry, I have no advice for you but I hope things get beeter for you!! I would be a nervous wreck and need medicated myself:( |
Thanks everyone and yes I definitely will need some medication for myself. I am a wreck and my house looks like a disaster. My daughter comes home early from school all week and wants to go shopping but I am torn because I hate leaving Gilmore alone. |
3 Attachment(s) I am sorry to hear about Gilmore. Pixie had her LP surgery in June and she was on crate confinement for 6 weeks. I never thought I would survive it. I had a kiss e collar from Mom to Hot Rod for her. They are soft and so much less stressful for them. I found Pixie never bothered with her stitches so I didn't need to use it very long. I also had a few different set ups for her so she wouldn't get bored. I bought a small animal expen (she isn't a jumper) and if I was in the kitchen I set it up there for her, then I would set it up on the bed so she could lay on the bed during the day if I was home. I also bought a play yard and kept her in that at night. It was impossible to keep her 100 % still but you do the best you can. She did great and was released to normal activity after 6 weeks. I know how stressful it is but hopefully Gilmore will settle in to a new routine for his recuperation. |
