The waiting game.... My little girl Maggie is 5 months old and weighs 3-4lbs. Last night she started acting funny. She was extremely tired and wobbly. I gave her a squirt of nutracal and hyped her up. She seemed her self again and even ate her dinner. This morning she was herself and doing good even eating all her food. But 3 hours later she was extremely tired like the night before. I gave her a squirt of nutracal and layed down with her. When my husband came home a few minutes later she tried to get up to greet him but started to shake and didn't want to stand. I brought her to the vet within the next 30 minutes. They checked her temperature, blood sugar, heart rate, and did blood work. Now I'm playing the waiting game. He blood sugar was normal as well as her temperature. Her blood work came back normal as well. He blood sugar did drop alittle from when they first tested it to when they did her blood work. They were unable to test her ATL level because they were having problems with the machine but would do it in a few days. I was left with it being (1) possibly her blood sugar (2) liver shunt, not sure until her ATL is tested (3) she ingested some sort of toxin although she hasn't had diarrhea or vomiting or (4) distemper which she will be tested for tomorrow. It makes me nervous not knowing and just waiting to see. They did give her a squirt of nutracal before I brought her home and it seemed to perk her up. I'm hoping its just her blood sugar and I'm watching her tonight. The vet said to give her a snack every few hours along with the nutracal incase it is the sugar level. Does anyone have any helpful suggestion to what could be wrong with her? I'm bringing her back tomorrow free of charge to see if she is doing any better but I just want answers.... |
I'm sorry your lil one is sick. Some of the girls will be by to help you soon, I'm sure. I believe she needs to be six months minimum age before a bile acid test can be given with accurate results. I'm not positive of that. Did the dr have any ideas at all? |
Well, I missed seeing what they were surmising as the possibilities. My question is why distemper? Is her nose dripping or is she sneezing? |
I hope Maggie is feeling better soon. The waiting is the worst. Think positive thoughts. Sending good thoughts and hugs to you! |
I'm not sure why distemper. I'm not even sure what distemper is to be honest. She kept talking about different things it could be but it sounded like she really didn't know right now because none of the test looked bad. And no her nose is not dripping or sneezing. The vet just kept saying it neurological because her shaking or wobbling isn't like a twitch. |
I can't believe it could be distemper, but who knows? Did she receive any vaccinations recently and what were they? |

Sorry I thought I replied but I don't see it. Yes she got her vaccinations on the 1st of November. I'm not positive the names of all of them but it was the 7 in 1 or is it 8 in 1? She is up to date til she makes a year. |
Well, I hope they can give you some answers soon and I really hope your little one will be ok. I know it's hard to wait for answers and I know how worried you are. Please keep us updated as you learn what's going on with her. |
Thank you and i'll post when I find out what's wrong |
Distemper does present with neurological symptoms, but I doubt it is that if she has had her shots. Hopefully, it will be something simple. It will be helpful for them to get the full blood profile done. I will keep Maggie in my thoughts and prayers. |

Good question about the Lepto. I hope Maggie is feeling better soon. She is in our prayers. |
This morning Maggie seems 100% better. I fed her like a pig all night like the vet said just incase it was her blood sugar. I even woke her in the middle of the night for a snack as suggested by the vet. When she woke this morning she was hyper and ready to play. I'm still bringing her to the vet for a check up today because the vet said she would look at her free of charge since they will be closed for Thanksgiving. Better safe then sorry! As for her vaccinations, I'm not sure about the Lepto. I can tell you what it says on her records but it has abbrevations so maybe you guys will know. 11-1-10 Bordetella Nasal (6 mos) Rabies IMRAB (1yr pgm) DA2PL-Parvo-Corona 3RD (1yr pgm) |

Some areas of the country do have a problem with Lepto. I never give it to mine though. However, I will tell you this. Never get the rabies at the same time as the other shots. You are the pup's parent. You tell them that you want it given at a separate time. Wait at least two weeks to get the rabies after the other shots are given. These pups are little and that is just too much in the way of vaccinations for their little bodies. Next time you go for vaccinations, tell them you want it given a few weeks later. I'm thinking she just had too much in the way of vaccinations all at the same time. |
