Eye ulcer: Maximo
 
Poor Maxman. We spent this morning at the vet to confirm my fear that he has a large eye ulcer. He was such a trooper enduring the dye test that requires having a slip of paper inserted under the eyelid. The vet gave us eye drops to help the eye heal and some pain medication. I have to bring him back for additional eye checks this week.

We don't know what caused the ulcer. A foreign object could have gotten stuck in his eye, or I'm concerned that top knot gel may have been the cause. I used our All Systems gel for the first time in a long time this week. Could be just a coincidence.

I noticed his left eye was very red last night and he was sensitive to light. Rinsed his eye with sterile saline and stayed up all night watching over him. Surprisingly, Max didn't seem all that concerned and was eager for breakfast and his morning walk.

Poor guy. Will he completely recover from the eye drops? I don't know anything about eye ulcers:confused:

If the ulcer is caught early and treated properly, yes the eye heals completely and fairly quickly. A typical ulcer is not uncommon. Dogs with dry eyes are particularly prone to them.

If ulcers are not treated and do not heal properly, they can cause loss of vision or loss of the eye. The eye can blow out like a car tire.

Thus, it is very important to get to the vet immediately with any eye abnormalities.

Glad you caught it early. Before I knew Maddie had dry eye, she suffered with several of them. Since we switched vets and have her on drops regularly she hasn't had any more.

Hope his heals up quickly

Things always happen on the weekends. Isn't it amazing? I'm sorry he has that problem with his eye. I hope it heals quickly.

Does Max have dry eye? Lady does so we've had our share of ulcers. Fortunately, hers have always cleared up pretty quickly.

With or without dry eye, sometimes all it takes is a foreign particle like a speck of dirt to get in their eye and them rubbing it.

Armani just had one last month... It looked so bad, I felt terrible for him... It healed in two weeks.... I will hope for the same for Maximo!

Could have been worse -- Thanksgiving! Thankfully our vet's office has Saturday morning hours. Our regular vet wasn't on call, but I was extremely happy seeing one of his partners, a very patient and kind man. Nice to have a gentle person for this delicate problem.

I don't think Max has dry eye. He doesn't usually rub or seem bothered, but maybe I should ask the vet for the dry eye test. I think Max did get something in his eye that caused this ulcer and some other factors, like the hair products and stray hairs probably compounded the problem. It's been windy and dusty here the past couple of weeks.

These ulcers are scary looking. If I look very closely, it is like a grape with a hole in the thin outer layer. Glad to hear Armani healed quickly.

I need to order Max some Doggles to wear on his morning walks. Bright light is hard on him.
I'm glad to know what they look like in case I ever encounter that. I think Doggles would be great with that condition. I hope he is soon well.

Did the vet take a swab to make sure there was not a bacterial or fungal cause to the ulcer? That is not uncommon either especially if he does not have dry eye.

No, the vet did not do a swab. I will ask about it when we return this week. The eye drops we were given are an antibiotic, so I'm wondering if they would take care of the bacteria or fungus if that is what caused the ulcer. When the ulcer heals, the vet will give us additional drops that include a steroid to help with inflammation.

The antibiotic should take care of it, if it was bacterial but it will not have an affect on fungal infections -- need an anti-fungal for that and that is not normally given unless they swab, look under the scope and know it is fungus. Bacteria is probably the biggest percent chance but I always hate to treat without knowing. They probably noticed other charateristics of the infection that looked bacterial in nature.
