Spaying Question I am getting my Maddy spayed next month and need any tips or advice you have to offer. I am very nervous about having this done due to her size and weight. She will be one on Black Friday and weight about 4 pounds. Is there anything I need to do prior to her spaying and after to help her through this. Is there anything I need to suggest to her vet that might be helpful for a small dog. I have had other dogs but with Maddy she is just so tiny and I am so worried about her getting spayed. How long does it take them to recover? are they on pain meds? Thanks, Brenda |
:) Check with your vet and make sure they do pre-op blood work. Our vet chooses to send them home with pain meds. Not all vets do blood work and pain meds. I hope yours does. Recovery time for my two was only a day or so. My youngest had just turned one year and she was her old self by the evening of the surgery. Good luck to you and your little one. She will be fine. I tend to think it is harder on us than them. Try to stay calm about it when taking her in. She is likely to pick up on your anxiety and you don't want her to feel anxious from that. Telling you to relax is much easier said than it was for me to do, but it will be alright. ;) When you schedule your apt. your vet should give you directions to follow the day before, day of, and days after. I went in with a list, literally, of questions I wanted to ask. |
How experienced is your vet with small dogs under 5 lbs? Ask him or her if you aren't sure. During the procedure, she should be on an IV. It considerably reduces the trauma of the whole procedure and she will come out of it hydrated etc. It costs a bit more to add that to the bill but well worth it. Especially since you have to fast her before the surgery. I also have Pedialyte, an electrolye solution you can get in your drug store in the baby section. Make sure it is Pedialyte not Pedisure whcih is something else. It will help them from getting stomach/bowel upsets that often will follow sedation and surgery. |
My Maggie was just about 3 lbs when she was spayed and she also had a couple of teeth pulled. She was in a little bit pain that night--she quieted down and went to sleep after some pain meds. She was still a little quiet the next day but then was good to go. The hard part is keeping them quiet after that! Wish you and Maddy well for her spay. |
