Ozzie diagnosed with pancreatitis Ozzie has been diagnosed with pancreatitis, due to the fact that his lipase levels are extremely high (in the thousands) and he is overweight. But my feeling is that the vet might be wrong, as Ozzie has no weight-loss, is eating happily, does not vomit. His tommy is bloated as well. Can anybody advise, I questioned this twice with my vet, but they just say that pancreatitis shows in different ways. I looked all over the internet and only his weight and the lipase level count agree, all other signs are not there. Anybody had the same, as Yorkies are (so said) more likely to get pancreatitis. Many many thanks from a very worried Mum. |
A Spec cPL (blood test) would confirm. High lipase in itself can indicate pancreatitis, but it isn't nearly as accurate as a cPL. What is your vet recommending? |
I have had pups with elevated lipase and no symptoms. Being overweight does put a strain on the pancreas. I would definitely try to get the weight off of him. My George had a couple of bouts of pancreatitis when he was younger. He had an elevated lipase level about a year ago and I was concerned, but the vet was not overly concerned at the time. He was a bit overweight and has now lost the excess weight and his levels are fine. As EllieMay said, more specific tests are usually done. Perhaps this link may help you: Canine Pancreatitis |
Thanks for your answers, the vet did a special blood test (but I have to check if it is the cpl one), will go to them on Monday, as I have to pick up the food they said he has to have, and ask them. They said it is the chronic form of it. I will keep you posted. And again, many thanks! I love my dogs so much, got 2 Yorkies and 1 Beagle and they are a happy bunch! |
Sounds like your vet may have done the testing already. Diet is very important! Make sure you follow his advice! Good luck and will look forward to hearing how things are going. :) |
You may want to talk with your vet about putting him on a diet and follow his instructions. If he loses wieght too fast is could cause diabetes and or organ failure. |
Post #4 says that she was going to pick up food from the vet, so I would think that his diet has been covered. :) |

Sorry...sort of a double post. Somehow the window cleared and I was back at square one....and ended up posting similar. Oh well. |
My last yorkie Ferdie, got pancreatisis. I never gave him anything with fat in it. but a dog sitter, I had watching him while on vacation did. That is how he got it. Aviod anything with fat. If they get it once they are pron to it coming back again. Did he eat anything out of the trash or table? The first time he was so sick when we returned from vacation, I knew something was wrong. The second time, he was in the car with my husband and I , i went to the store to get dinner, I purchased 2 steaks, guess what he got into while driving home? he never made a noise. 4 days later he was acting fine He want to the vet for a check up, he did blood test, to recheck him and I tod the vet what had happened. he had it again. Bless his heart he lived to be 19 and a half years old. Just be very careful.Good luck. |

Yes I understand she is picking up food from the vet. However not all vets tell you how much to feed. You would be surprized how many people pick up diet food then go home and cut the daily amt in half. That's when it can be dangerous. Just saying, as it's better to be safe then sorry.:) |
Thanks and yes he had a CP.. test Thanks to you all who gave me advise, very much appreciated. I went to the Vet (as they had a problem with the delivery, only could pick the food up today) and they confirmed that Ozzie had the special test for pancreatitis. They gave me Royal Canine Gastro Instestinal tinned dog food and advised (based on his current weight) he should have 1.5 tins a day. Just have to hope now that he will eat it as well, as Ozzie is quite a fussy eater (I know it is strange, specially as he is overweight) but in normal days he got 2x 0.5 small tin of Chappie, which he happily eats. Ozzie does not have any treats from the table or other food during the day. Again, thanks to you all for caring. XX |
Please keep us posted on Ozzie's progress! :) |
Our Meadow has pancreatitis and our vet put her on the Science Diet W/D food. The RC your vet has Ozzie on is also good for the same condition. We did have to stop all treats with her (we simply get a piece of her food out and say treat and she believes it). We also ALWAYS keep boil-in-a-bag rice and chicken broth at all times since when she does have the occassional flare up, we switch her to that to settle her for a day or two, then ease back to the SDW/D. It's tough and scary, but with proper nutrition like they have you on, it is VERY manageable (depending on the severity). Meadow has been diagnosed with it for 4 years now and you would never know it! Keep us posted! |
I don't mean to alarm you, but a dog with elevated Lipase (without elevated amylase) and a bloated tummy can be warning signs of lymphangiectasia. Many time with this intenstinal disease, severe symptoms do not present until very end stage. If you vet has not already done a Spec Cpl, it needs to be done as diet alone is not enough if it is more than pancreatitis. The earlier you get a correct diagnosis, the easier it will be to treat. Many vets know very little about Protein Losing Enteropathy and Lymphagiectasia. Pancreatitis is the current "one size fits all" diagnosis. Please ask your vet about this. I am praying this if this is what he has, you have caught it very early..... |
I feel that the cpl should be checked as well, HOWEVER just because your fur baby isn't showing signs of it now doesn't mean he won't "FLARE" up in the future. Bailey seems healthy to the average but he has chronic Pancreatitis and IBD. It's all when the system decides to "flare" up. That's just my opinion. |
