congestive heart failure Hi. I have two 11 yr old yorkies and love them both like my children. My male yorkie was diagnosed with congestive heart failure last April. I was devastated, but the vet put him on Enalapril and Furosemide. He was doing pretty good. Then the vet talked to a cardiologist and also put him on Vetmedin. After that he was able to play fetch again and is doing really well. He acts like he feels so much better! The only problem now, is his coughing. They said the congestion is in his throat, but not his lungs. Is there anything I can do to help this? After he runs around and barks a little, it is better. Does he need to walk everyday or not? I have heard both. Rest or exercise? Vetmedin seems to be a miracle drug. Hopefully I can keep him around for a few more years. He is precious! Thanks, Sandie |
Hi! Sorry to hear about your male yorkie. My Pom had CHF and Cushing's and lived very comfortably for 2 years on the first 2 medicines you mentioned. You may want to check with the cardiologist to see if the coughing is a side effect of the new medicine. If not maybe they can prescribe something to help with the cough. I don't know about the walking. I hope he has many good years to come. |
I'm sorry you're going thru this. I've been thru it twice in the past. Mine still loved to walk with me around the yard, but we didn't take any long walks. It's been a long time ago and I'm sure I've forgotten more than I remember. I wish I could help you more, but perhaps someone else has been thru it more recently than I have. Please know that we are thinking about you.:) |
I also sorry to heard this, I also wish the best for your little one, I agree with Patti, consulting with the vet is always a plus:animal-pa |
I'm sorry to hear about your pup's CHF. Only advice I can give is don't give any medications without the doctor's approval and report ANY changes, no matter how seemingly minor to the vet so medications can be adjusted as necessary. Dogs can live for a good long time with CHF if managed carefully -- but the amounts of medications they take can cause liver or kidney problems. With Bungee we had to keep adjusting the meds for the CHF - especially the Furosemide -- because they were too hard on her aged kidneys - she was nearly 17 when diagnosed. It sounds like your vet is managing the CHF well - if the congestion is in the throat, he is probably not going to want to medicate for it unless it's a serious health problem just to spare your little male's organs the stress of more medication. |
Thanks! I really appreciate all the advise. I love my yorkies so much that I would love to keep them around for as Long as possible. It is good to hear that yours lived so long. Sandie |
Never been thru this but I'm here for support....:) |
Thank you and I hope that you never have to go thru this. It is very heart breaking. I love my yorkies so much! |
By the way, to all of you, your yorkies are beautiful! I love looking at all the pictures. Thanks for all the support. |
My first little one had CHF and I think that you are doing everything within your means. As for him playing and walking, I think that he will let you know when he tires out. My thuoghts and prayers are with you. He sounds like he is a wonderful little man and I can tell that he is much loved.:2hearts2: |
Your baby is in my prayers. It sounds like you are doing what is best for him. Please let us know how he is doing. |
Thank you! I sure will. Right now he is doing good besides the coughing. Some days are worse then others on that. Yesterday was good, very little coughing. |
I'm so glad to hear your baby is doing better. Hopefully, the coughing will get better and better as time goes on. |
