Moto has an eye ulcer
 

My Yorkie Moto has a eye ulcer. Im pretty sure he cut his eye while running thru some dry weeds that are on the edge of our yard. He loves that area and he's always darting in and out. Monday right after dinner I let him out to do some business. He didn't cry or yelp but once he came in he was pawing at his face like he had something in his eye. And he started producing more tears in one eye. I opted to give him a bath to see if maybe I could dislodge something he may of had in his eye. I thought that fixed the problem b/c he didn't show any problems that evening (altho I did not blow dry his face so I was unsure how many tears he was producing) But the next morning I knew we had a problem he had a large boogie looking eyesleepy and his eye was half closed. So I got dressed waited till 8:45 and left the house and called the vets office to let them know we were on our way in and to find him and appt.
They did a eye drop test and a smear and a tear count. Seams like his other eye is slightly on the dry side. But they did see a ulcer on his semi closed eye and were now on the drops 2 different types and pain meds . I've already seen a difference in his tear production and lack of boogies. I have a follow up next week and will continue to use the drops till then.

Have any of you gone thru this before? Does this type of thing happen often? Are the drops the best option for handling this problem? I trust my vet but I don't know if they have other options that I can also follow. Will it completely heal on its own or will this be an ongoing thing? Any kind of feedback you guys and gals can add would be great.

I thought the same thing happened to Ivan, my one Biewer this past Spring. I took him to the Vet but fortunately she couldn't find anything wrong.

Either way, she said if caught early and treated there is no reason to believe nothing but a full recovery.

Actually, I think this happens more often with breeds like this because not only are they closer to the ground (weeds/twigs, sharp objects) but they get groomed regularly. Lots of times this is a grooming accident when brushing. You know how quick these guys can be!

Years ago my first Yorkie tried to go under a chain link fence and ulcerated his eye. It was severe but with treatment he completely healed. I hope Moto's eye heals quickly.

Corneal ulcers are very painful, but usually heal quickly. Did your vet check the tear production in his injured eye or is he going to wait until it heals? Eyes that don't produce enough tears are prone to ulcers. Lady has dry eye and has several ulcers.

He said he will re access the tear production after it heals. The uninjured eye he felt may be in the dry eye category. But would double check that as well.

He did advise that I may have to use special drops if it is infact the case of dry eyes.

Poor baby. It's making my eyes sting just thinking about it. Hope your little Moto is feeling better this afternoon and heals quickly!

cooper has kcs dry eye, he gets drops every day, he has had a few ulcers but since he is on the tacrolimus drops he has not had any, his ulcer healed pretty quickly, but was a few weeks before he was looking better and opned his eye, he hated the light, i bought him the doggie sun glasses, he hated them too , but hated the light more so he kept them on. I hope moto feels better soon.
