Please help Chloe has this bump (that feels like a bone) sticking out smack dab in the middle of the bottom of her ribs, I'm scared to death because I've never felt it before and I'm always adamant about checking her over. It's the size of the tip of my index finger, she is a tiny thing (3lbs), if that gives you an idea of her proportion to the size of the bump. I have searched the forums and have come across Xiphoid Process, Protruding Sternum, and Floating Ribs. Does anyone have any information on these or similar problems and can you tell me if it is life threatening or something to be concerned about? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. |
Many times dogs will have a bump that is in the rib cage area. The first time I felt one, I was also alarmed. It was nothing. Just the same, I would just go to the vet and have her checked out. :) |
My guess is that it's the xiphoid process. You have one too. :) But if you are really concerned I would give your vet a call. The Ultimate Sternum Dog Breeds Information Guide and Reference |
I thought it was on the dog's side .. at the end of a rib? That happens a lot...not sure if it is called something. |

Sorry for the delay I was bathing her, she's quite the furball (cottony coat) and wet fur = better view. It is in the middle at the bottom of her rib cage, very likely to be her xiphoid process but am concerned because it just appeared this week. I'm sure I'm being the over reactive overly protective mom but I went out of town last weekend and she stayed with my parents, when I returned I felt the bump. I will be taking her to the vet to be 100% positive, I do not like to take any risks with my babies and my vet thinks I am crazy because I'm always questioning things that turn out to be nothing but it's better safe than sorry!! |
I am SO sure your vet does not think you are crazy. They love people who take care of their pets. :) I am also sure it is probably nothing, but like you said it is better safe than sorry. :) Let us know how things go. |
Thank you guys.... this place is the best. :) I will let you know how things go. |
