Spay Appointment due tomorrow..in heat?
 
Well.. Holly is a year and a half, and her last heat was around July. I made the appointment, finally, to get her spayed Thursday. Well, lo and behold, she goes on her second heat, which I was trying to avoid!

Should I take her in anyway and get it done? Is it more risky? What should I do?

Even if I wait I'm still terrified to get her spayed. I've been crying for a week just about everyday getting anxious for it. She's my little child.. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy. Am I over-reacting? What to dooooo?

I personally would not have a pup spayed while she was in heat. It is riskier and also more expensive. Speak with your vet and postpone it; but I would not wait any longer. ie don't wait until another heat!

That's what I feared.. It's making me so upset to wait another few weeks, all over again. This is honestly the most anxious I have ever been. I'm absolutely terrified of her going through this, and sad for her as well. But i KNOW it has to be done for the benefit in the long-run..

Any advice would be welcomed as I am freaking out. :eek:

I would put it off till after her cycle. Have you had blood work on her ? if not I would recommend it for her safety and your sanity.

Would bloodwork tell me if she would be OK with the anesthesia?
I'll be sure to cancel the spay and get bloodwork done instead.

Yes, when you cancel her appt ask for the Pre-anesthetic blood work.

Anesthesia is processed through the liver. Yorkies especially need pre-op bloodwork since they are prone to liver disease.

I personally would get the lab work done later...perhaps two or three days prior to the surgery date! Things can change and it is better to have current labs.

I had to have Cali spayed during her heat because they thought she had a intestinal blockage. They needed to do a liver biopsy too. I was really nervous as I knew you shouldn't have them spayed when in heat. I talked to the board certified surgeon and she assurred me she would be fine. The incision was larger and her recovery was harder and it was close to 3000.00 for everything. So since there is no emergency with your baby I would wait. I agree the blood work should be done closer to the time of the spay. I know how anxious you are to get it over but by taking all precautions she should do just fine.

Definately wait -- I would only spay while in heat if there is some health emergency reason to do so. Definately more risky.

Wow that's scary AND expensive. I can't imagine. I'm glad that she is OK now though!

I called today and rescheduled everything. They gave me the bloodwork appt. this Thursday instead. So I'm going to go ahead and do that tomorrow. Let you know how it goes! Holly is such a trooper when it comes to the vet. So proud of her. :-)

Better to be safe than sorry! Especially when it comes to my baby. :dogzzz:

That very same thing happened to me with my stray pup. (not a Yorkie) It took quite awhile to finally get her spayed, because I made an appointment and she went into heat. (She also went into heat right after we found her on the streets.)

Glad you have things figured out and a rescheduled appointment.

I agree with Ladyjane. I'd wait and get the bloodwork done closer to her spay date. She'll be in heat for three weeks, then most vets like to wait at least a month after that to do the spay.

My vet requires bloodwork be done within a month period before anesthesia or it has to be repeated.

Why not schedule her spay now and her bloodwork for sometime the week before?
