Yorkie won't eat an vomiting..please help! Our 18 month old yorkie began vomiting on Fri night and was so lethargic on Sat that I took him to the vet that morning. We can't get him to eat ANYTHING and he is so pitiful with absolutely no energy. They admitted him to give IV fluids and meds Sat and we just picked him up today to see if he'll do any better with eating at home. So far nothing. :( They did an x-ray but, found nothing. He hasn't eaten anything that he shouldn't have to. The only explanation they can give is possible bacterial infection of digestive tract. He was sent home with anti-nausea and anti-bacterial meds and a nutritional supplement. Any tips from those who've had experiences such as this would be much appreciated! Also, any tips on how to get him to eat? |
What food do you have him on? Perhaps a diet change is in order? |
Poor little guy. Did the vet suggest a diet of chicken and rice until his tummy is feeling better? Keep us posted on how he is doing. |
The vet said a diet change shouldn't be necessary. He's been on Canidae since he was a baby. He did suggest trying boiled chicken and rice. We also bought some baby food that consists of only ground chicken and chicken broth. He licked it off my husband's finger last night and acted like he liked it...was also able to keep it down so that was some progress! When I tried to get him to drink the 50:50 powerade/water this morning, he acted really thirsty and lapped it up (I stopped him when I was afraid he was getting too much), only to throw some of it back up 15-20 minutes later. But, we think he drank more than he vomited so that's good. We're going to try ice cubes for awhile for hydration. As of now, he's held his Flagyl medication down for 25 minutes so maybe we're getting better! Gonna' try the chicken and rice tonight. Please continue to pray for him! It's so hard seeing him hurt! |
Have you tried hand feeding him in small amounts - like you would do with treats? You could also try scrambling an egg, or adding some parmesean to his food. What food is he on now? Chicken and rice would be good since his tummy has been upset. |
His tummy is probably still very sensitive or a bit upset with the acid. What I have done in the past to get them started and to get their appetite going is to get a dropper and give them some chicken broth for awhile, then you can slowly introduce him to some boiled chicken and rice with the broth on it. If you have to, start him out by hand feeding him and then see if he'll take off and eat it by himself. Getting him to eat right now is the important thing. |
If he's liking the baby food, I'd continue with that. Maybe a half a jar at a time... it's also considered a bland diet. When he can keep that down, add in some chicken and rice, or add the baby food to the chicken and rice... it'll help him transition over quicker. He may just need many small meals to get going again, get his tummy used to having food in it. |
Just make sure there's no onion in the baby food. It's used in a lot of chicken based foods. |
Poor baby!! I hope things improve quickly for you. |
Did they test his stool? |
