Head shaking like parkinsons? I thought I was imagining this but my son mentioned it to me last night so now I am wondering again. Sometimes when I look at Lexi she shakes her head up and down real fast (Like Pakinsons). Has anyone seen this in their dogs? Lexi was knocked out over the weekend or had a seizure of some sort. We are not quite sure what it was. But I think this shaking was occuring before that episode. She seems normal in every other way. |
My mother has a Maltese that does this. Their vet said it was hereditary and is a neurological disorder that comes from bad breeding. They got Lily spayed a couple of weeks ago. As far as the head shaking, nothing can be done for her. |

Well Lexi did not do it at all yesterday so I think I will just continue to moniter her and see if it gets worse. Has your mothers dog continued to get worse? Lexi is not even 6 months old so I am wondering if this will get worse as she ages. Does your mothers dog have any other problems or is it just the shaky head? |
With bad breeding, I'm asuming that the breeder didn't check out the lines (like a BYB or mill would do). :confused: That's what he said. But I have to wonder how many other puppies from this breeder has the same problem. It could be an isolated case but since we didn't keep in contact with her, who knows. At first, my mom thought she was having seizures. I kept Lily for her when she went to Colorado. Then I noticed the same thing...head shaking or bobbing. Not for a long period of time...maybe around 20 seconds. She was fully awake and her body didn't stiffen. I told mom to get her to a vet and have her checked out but that I didn't feel it was wasn't seizures. Lily's condition hasn't improved but it hasn't gotten worse either. She still has her episodes. Don't know what kind of tests were run because I wasn't there at the vet's. Mom lives out of town. Also wanted to add that Lily is a year old this month. My mom started noticing her episodes around 5-6 months of age. |
I just did a little research to see if I could find something that may help you. After reading that someone mentioned a Maltese doing it also, I think I MAY know what it is. It is called "White Shaker Dog Syndrome". Mostly white dogs, such as Maltese or Westies get it. However, Yorkshire Terriers can get it also. Watch for your dog's eyes to dart around. It also mentioned that the dog will not shake when totally calm and sleeping. It says that dogs develop it very quickly from ages 6 months to 3 years. It doesn't hurt the dog in any way and there is treatment for it. Hope this helps. I'd suggest going online and typng in the syndrome to learn more about it and see if that is what you think your Yorkie has. Good luck. |

I read the information too. Right now any shaking Lexi has done has remained in her head. I will certainly keep a close eye on her and look for the other signs. At least it can be treated if it needs to be. Thanks again! :) Judy |
about head bobbing hi, years ago i bought a lil male for 500.00, he was fine untill he recieved his shots , then this shaking occured , only in the head, like a bobble toy, he was fine in every other way, worried that this was a heridtary thing, i gave him away to a friend at 7 mo old who neutered him, he does not do this anymore tho, i would have been scared to breed him, i think maybe the shots hit a nerve in him maybe, but unsure, i didnt want to risk using him for breeding, hes a happy and beautiful dog tho, jim |
It is funny to find this thread tonight. I have a Old English Bull Doggee that's head does this shaking thing. They are called Head tremors. I can have him do all his commands while he is doing the head shaking and everything. He started this at about 6 months to 8 months old. I found it is something that a lot of dogs get when they are in a growing spirt. I talked to his breeder and she told me to give him calcuim tablets. I just bought a vitiman with a good amount of calcuim in it and he gets two a day. I have slacked of a few times this month being one of them and he gets them back. The vets tell me it is not what is making him have the head tremors but I see him everyday and know what is going on. He gets these every once in a while. Or should I say when I mess up and for get to give him his pills. I hope your mom's little one is fine and it isn't anything serious. I will keep her in my prayers. |
