Help-Inhaled Object Ziva was outside yesterday and was playing in the longer grass/weeds. She was biting or catching the weeds with little stickers-burrs on them. She must have gotten one stuck in her throat and started sneezing, then gagging and drooling. I figured she got it out and she seemed ok. But then started repeated sneezing fits -I got her to drink a little milk- wouldn't take water and ate her dinner, but she sneezed thru the night and this morning she is still sneezing, drooly, and now hiding under the bed.I called the vet and have an afternoon appt. Any similar incidents? recommendations? |
Poor baby!! She sounds miserable. I've never had this happen, but with the drooling I'd be very concerned she still has something stuck and that she might swallow it. Can you possibly take her in this morning instead of this afternoon? |
Sounds like something that needs to be addressed ASAP! It may not be the following, but you need to look at this link: Foxtails - A Deadly Summertime Danger - Dogs |
Yeah, they may be able to see her as an emergency for a few extra dollars. One of mine got grass up her nose, it took over a week to get it out, it kept disappearing. It ended up being almost 6 inches long. If you live where there are foxtails, this can be a common occurance from what I've read. Good luck at the vets.... let us know what happens.... |
Thanks for the ideas and link, we do have a type of pampas grass growing there also- not barbed but seed heads. I'll bring a piece along with me so the vet might know what he is looking for. I wish she could just blow her nose! Maybe if they sedate her they can irrigate her sinus? She is calm now but her tail tucked tight. |
kjc- How did the piece of grass come out? removed? Did you know something was there because of the sneezing? |
If there is something up there, they more than likely will have to sedate her. I am surprised they are having you wait until the afternoon. I would be at their doorstep now. |

This was the first thing that came to my mind too. Then I saw where the op is in FL and remembered the article said something about foxtails being west of the Mississippi and thinking/hoping it wasn't foxtails. Good luck ritapatt....hope this is something the vet can just flush out. OMG....I'm starting to look at grasses with fear. |
I would be on that vets steps immediately.............Hope everything goes ok..................Keep us posted!....................Boops mom |

I doubt it is that, but I wanted the OP to realize that it could be very serious. This is not something I would wait overnight on....and definitely not another whole day. :( |
Poor baby - get her to the vet asap. My friend's lab starting drooling, sneezing, whining, not eating and they found he had swallowed something that scratched his trachea and caused an infected abscess. He had emergency surgery to drain the abscess, and he's fine now. Get her in before something minor turns into something major. |
Poor baby :(. I hope he is okay, how scary. Maybe call your vet and ask if you can come in ASAP rather than later...? |
Ziva had a major hacking thing going on and she must have loosened whatever was stuck! She is so alright I can't believe it, she's running around like nothing happened!- called the vet, said to keep an eye on her and just bring her in if anything changes. |
