Sam is sick :-( Hi all, it's been a while since i've posted but i need some advice and i know that when it comes to Yorkies you guys are the onees to come to. I noticed last week that Sam had some bumps on his body, they reminded me of bug bits that humans would get. I thought it was fleas so I talked to the vet and he said that if it was fleas I would know because i was see them if i looked. Well i looked really well and there was nothing to be found. So i called back and talked to another dr in the office and he told me that it could be a food allergy since he was itching the bumps. It didn't make any sense since Sam's been eating the same food since i brought him home. He said it didn't matter that a dog can develop an allergy at anytime, he recommended a Natural dog food that was wheat free, Nature's Recipe. the first night (Saturday) i mixed some of the Natures with his regular food, he ate both without incident, same thing on Sunday...then on MOnday the little monkey picked all of the Natures kibble out of the bowl and ONLY at that, he would touch the old stuff. I thought it was hilarious and thought that it was a good sign that he really liked the new food. he seemed fine but I woke up around 430 am on Tuesday to him whining (that's what he does when he has to go potty, he never barks, just whines) I never turned on the light I just reached in, grabbed him and I took him out to potty and he peed, then i put him back in his crate and went back to bed. I wasn't in bed for 2 minutes when he started whining again...that is somehting he NEVER does, he always lays back down so i knew something wasn't right. I went into the kitchen and turned on the light, he was in the middle of dry heaving and i pulled him out so he could throw up on the tile floor instead of his bed. Then i noticed what had been going on while i was sleeping. there was vomit everywhere...at least 3 spots of food and a few spots of bile. I cleaned his bed and blankets and just cuddled him till i had to go back to work. He hasn't thrown up again but he won't eat either. He hasn't pooped since Monday night until about an hour ago when i checked on him on my lunch break but when he pooped it was pretty lose. Do that's our story...do you think it's all because of the change in his food or does he have some sort of bug? he's not listless and he's drinking and peeing without a problem. I even got him to run a little while i was at lunch. Any thoughts would be grately apperciated. Thanks, Kristy and Sammy |
I can't tell you that's what it is. I can only guess. If you suddenly change their food, they will nearly always get sick. Most of us change food the way you did, just adding a little more of the new food over a period of time. If your little one is very small, you want to be really careful that he doesn't become dehydrated. You did say he was drinking though, so he should be ok. How you are going to change him over to the new food without him getting sick, I don't know. Like I said, that is how I change over to a new food. Have you asked the dr? |
Thanks, for the thoughts. Sam is a little over 13 lbs so he's a pretty big boy. I haven't called the vet yet, i figured they were going to want to see him and money is a bit tight right now. last time i took him in it cost me 80 bucks for them to tell me he just liked the taste of grass. |
If he hasn't started eating yet, you may want to try him on some chicken and rice for a few days to help get him back on track. Then mix in a bit of his kibble gradually over the next few days. What flavor of Nature's Recipe did you get for him? Many pups will vomit yellow bile at night if their tummies are too empty. Maybe try feeding him a little meal or a snack right before bedtime might help to stop that. Hope he's feeling better soon.... how are the lumps doing? Any improvement? How big are they and what color? Where are they on his body? |
I've always had to feed mine a snack at night, too.:) Please keep us updated and let us know how he does. |
