Hernia after spay... My 5 year old Yorkie (Sophie) had a c-section 13 weeks ago and was spayed. She had 3 beautiful baby girls by the way! :) Earlier today we were doing our daily hair brushing routine when i felt a small lump about the size of a small grape right at the base of her incision scar. Of course I start to panic and start thinking the worse (cancer). Since its after hours at our vet and i already have an appointment for the puppies tomorrow i figured id take her and have the vet look at her while I'm there. But since its 1 am and i cant sleep i decided to Google what it could be. Hernia came up (and if it turns out to be a hernia) I wonder if it was a bad spay job by my vet. Sophie Isn't a very hyper dog that likes to run and jump she prefers to lay down and lick her baby's till their dripping wet lol and this is just happening now after 3 months! I guess my question would be is this going to be another huge vet bill? or should i say something to the vet? |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new puppies! Sometimes small lumps will appear after a surgery, but it could also be an abcess or infection from a piece of stitch left behind. Most lumps from operations will disappear in time, but it is always a good idea to have your vet look at anything questionable, especially after a surgery. |
A hernia will be soft to the touch if you press on it. They occur when their is a gap in between the muscles and intestine protrudes. It doesn't necessarily mean that it was a bad spay job, but that something happened to cause the muscle to separate again. That something could be her being over active before she was completely healed. Is it possible that what you are seeing is a keloid (raised) scar from the spay? Those will be firmer to the touch and smaller than a hernia. |
I would guess that it is internal stiches. You can take her temp to make sure she doesnt have a fever in case it isnt that. |
Thanks for the replies! Turns out she does have a hernia but the doctor said it happened due to an injury and not the spay. We also found a lump the size of a lima bean on one her her breast. Doctor gave her some clavamox to see if that will clear it up. If not then when she goes in to have her hernia fix doctor will biopsy it. Hopefully everything turns out fine. Thanks again for the replies! :) |
