Swollen, red teat My poor lil girl! Her middle left nipple is double the size and red today. I will take her to the vet tomorrow but is there anything I can do to help her today? I put her tee-shirt on to protect it since she's been scratching it. It's definitely bothering her. I'm fearing it might be mastitis or worse cancer. She is almost 3 (in November) and the terrible folks that had her before me used her twice already for breeding... despite her heart murmur and severely luxated patella. :( She is just getting over being in heat otherwise I would've had her spayed by now. I know her teat was not like this yesterday because I groomed her and inspected her whole body. I feel so bad for her. :( |
I don't want to alarm you but I read up on mastitis and the article said treatment needs to begin immediately. Perhaps you should call an emergency clinic and describe her symptoms rather than waiting until tomorrow. |

Thanks! I called the vet at home and have an appointment tomorrow morning. The swelling has gone down considerably since I covered it. I put some cold compresses and grapefruit seed extract on it. I hope my vet doesn't think it needs a biopsy. My grocery store just closed at 7 so I can't get the cabbage. Wish I had checked earlier - I'm an idiot. Any other ideas for the swelling? |
The only other thing I can offer is some campophenic (spelling). Use very little. That also helped Ellie. You can get it at any drug store. It's a liquid and it smells really bad. Good luck to you. The cold compresses will help. They will probably put her on antibotics. This will help too. If it's too bad, they may have to lance it, but usually that's only in extreme cases. Good luck and keep us updated. |
The vet said her nipples are enlarged due to hormones. He thinks since she recently had her nails trimmed one of the sharp nails caught on her nipple while she was scratching and invited some bacteria into the teat. We're treating it with a 50/50 hydrogen peroxide/water solution 3 x a day and placing bacitration gel on it until it heals. It looks a lot better today! Dogs have amazing healing capabilities! Lesson - file rough edges off of your pups nails after they've been clipped! |
double post - oops! |
