Lexi is spending the night in ER Please say a prayer for Lexi tonight. She may have a possible small intestine obstruction. I just got home from the Emergency Vet and she did not get to come home. :( Everything seemed to start late Thursday night. She was acting very odd, hiding, nervous. We thought she was just being freaky about the fire in the fireplace. (she can be an funny little thing) Well, she did not sleep all night, up and down pacing around. About noon on Friday the runny diarrhea started. I had tried a beef Primal raw on Tuesday and she usually has chicken. So that had to be it. I would have been ok with the diarrhea but at 5 pm Friday she vomited food from that morning. Then several more times just watery. I was afraid of what the night might bring and she was not feeling well at all. You could see in her eyes. A call to the Emergency Vet and off we went. Blood Tests are good. Xrays show either an enlarged small intestine or large intestine. Apparently it is difficult to know which it could be as they wrap around each other. Depending on which it is could be good or not good. Anyway, after many cost estimates and discussions on how to proceed. It was decided that she will spend the night on fluid IV with med for her tummy discomfort. A new xray at 6:30 this Sat am to see if the enlarged area is subsiding. I will be making arrangements to pick her up at 8am for a second opinion at a regular vet if surgery is suggested. Wow, I am very tired but cannot sleep thinking about poor Lexi. Could this just be a very expensive gas bubble? I felt so at the mercy of the emergency care vets and their lists of expenses........agggggg. But how could I not leave her to their care? No matter what the cost??? If they give me good news tomorrow they will have earned every cent. Thanks so much for listening so late! I cannot sleep. (did I say that already?) |
I hope this is just a costly gas bubble. Poor baby! |
poor baby girl..I hope things get resolved soon |
Praying that little Lexie only has a gas bubble and will be good as new very soon. I totally understand your panic, but I believe that you absolutely did the right thing. Will check for updates. |
Prayers for your little one! We have gone through obstructions twice with Wrigley. The barium took care of it both times, no fun. Let us know how she is! |
wow what a long night. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers! I called the ER vet and the second xray this morning looks like things are moving thru. (gas) They made her comfortable all night with meds and fluids. And I will need to keep an eye on her and bland diet. They thought they should keep her until she eats and keeps things down, but I already know she won't eat for them! I will make a call to the local vet this morning as the er vet will have her xrays and blood test on a comp disk for us in case we need them. It is always such an emotional call with these things and the cost is crazy. But I could not live with myself if she needed surgery or had a bad infection. I am so glad it appears to be gas. She is such an attention getter! |
That's great news. You both must be exhausted. Hope you can get a little rest today while waiting for her to be able to come home! |
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your baby. I'm very happy to hear she is getting better. I hope the two of you can cuddle up together later to get some rest. |
Poor Lexi :(! How scary for you, and her. You were so smart to take her in so quickly, as blockages can be immediately life threatening. She will be in my thoughts, and please update us when you can. :) |
Oh, dear! What a scary experience! I'm so glad it doesn't look like a blockage. Now you'll need the ER for the heart attack you are going to have when you get the bill! LOL! |
What a scare! So glad to hear it is not so serious as a blockage. Hope your baby and you recover quickly! |
She is home. She will eat rice today and chicken added tomorrow. The vet showed me the new xray and what a difference a night of fluids can make. Her tummy and small intestine were full of gas and it has moved into the large intestine. She has antibiotics to ward off any potential infection. We will need to watch if this happens again in case there is something else going on. The vet advised that anytime a small dog has both diarrhea and vomiting there should be concern. Plus she was very very uncomfortable. Of course these things always happen when the regular vet is closed. Just like when the kids were little! It is good to know the Emergency vet is there when you need it. I can now say the cost of gas has really gone up! But piece of mind..... priceless :) |
I am so glad she is doing better today. |
Hope she continues to improve... |
