Diarreah and lime green vomit I have an appointment to see the vet today, but,I am concerned and worried. My dog had diarreah for 2 days,I called the vet,and they gave me "metronidazole"50mg.They told me to give him that 2 times a day.I gave him one Tuesday night,2 on Wednesday, and, so far 1 today. He has not pooped yet today, but he did at 2am this morning and it was still diarreah.About 11:30am today he threw up something liquidy and lime green.I called the vet and explained everything to them, and they told me to bring him in at 3:45.I am worried about him. 3:45 seems so far away!He acts fine and he's full of energy.I fed him some boiled chicken and rice,he ate it all and loved it!What do you think?Help!BTW I forgot to mention,he is 7 months old. |
That med is for giardia. Did the vet say he had it? Hope your baby feels better soon and you get an answer so you can treat him and get well fast! Good luck! |
I was going to say the same thing - that the medicine is for giardia. Did your puppy have a stool sample taken to determine that he had a parasite before you started giving him this medicine? I had gotten a puppy with giardia (at 5 months old) and first gave him panacur. He still continued to have the diarreah, so the vet prescribed the metronidazole. We then tried the chicken, rice and yogurt - and still had the diarreah. It turned out that most likely the panacur got rid of the parasite - but the puppy was so stressed out that he continued to get himself sick. It took about a week before we had a firm stool. We did not experience throwing up though - so obviously until your vet runs some test - you will not be certain. Good Luck! |
Metronidazole is used for many conditions besides giardia. Often when a pup has diarrhea, vets prescribe it not only for the effect on bacteria, but also because it acts as an anti inflammatory for the bowels. Since the symptoms are continuing and he is also now vomiting he does need to be seen for sure. Hope all goes well at the vet this afternoon. :) |
My vet prescribes metronidazole for Rhett when he has diarrhea. It is for protozoal infections, but it also treats infections from anaerobic bacteria. It also has immune-modulating effects, so it's useful in IBD and colitis. The lime green emesis was most likely bile and mucous from having an empty stomach. Glad your baby is being seen today. |
They took a stool sample, gave him a Cerenia injection, which, the vet tells me is supposed to shut off the "vomit"receptors in his brain so he doesn't vomit. He only vomited once though, thank god. They also gave him a "Famotidine"injection, which is basically "Pepcid AC"They told me to buy "Pepcid Ac"10mg tablets, and, give him one quarter of a tablet twice a day with the "Metronidazole"They also gave him special food that they say will help bind him.I told the vet that I was over a friends house this weekend with Max and my friend gave Max a "Busy Rollhide"made by Purina.I normally wouldn't give him something like that, but,I didn't want to be rude,so I figuered why not.As soon as I told the vet that though, she said, ohhhhh, that's it,that's why he's sick! Those things are no good! After doing some research on it,I found out that their TERRIBLE!!!Lot's of dogs have gotten sick over them, and I think there is even a class action lawsuit pending! From what I understand,Purina took the Busy Rollhides for large dogs off the shelves, but, still sell the ones for small to medium dogs! Not sure why?I'll keep you posted,so far he went once since we got back from the vet, and,no change. He looks and acts fine,he's full of energy,if it wasn't for the diarreah,I wouldn't even know he was sick!I'll keep my fingers crossed! |
Yikes! Some of the stuff they sell for dogs is awful. These little ones are really affected by this stuff. Thank goodness it was not worse. Remember in the future not to give in to peer pressure! Better to just simply say thanks, but no thanks, he has a sensitive stomach. You can try to explain why, but I find that many people don't want to know about what they feed. When I go to the bank they know not to give my pups treats...I simply lied a few times about how they get car sick...and now they know! :) I just don't know what they are giving out but I don't want to come of rude to them. Your vet sounds great...doing all the things that make total sense! I am sure he will be much better very soon! |
