Can't keep food down
 
Teddy can't keep food down today, but he appears fine otherwise. He vomited breakfast, lunch, and his yogurt. No presence of blood.

Should I feed him his regular dinner or hold the food, or serve him a little chicken and rice? His appetite has not diminished.

He is my sensitive system boy. I will monitor him tonight and if he doesn't improve by tomorrow, take him to the vet.

If it were me, I would try to get him to eat a little chicken and rice for dinner. But, I don't have much experience with sensitive tummies so I hesitate to even say anything. Hope he feels better soon.

yes feed something bland; chicken and rice; or ground turkey and oatmeal. add some water when serving it; to hydrate him. hope he feels better.

Thank you Bonny and Elly. I gave him steamed chicken and rice and he gobbled it down. We'll report back later about whether or not it stays down.

Good news: Teddy had a great evening walk and produced a nice, solid stool.

Bad news: He threw up again just now. Maybe I gave him too much to eat. We'll see how breakfast goes.

some dogs are sensitive to chicken; you might want to try turkey or beef; and oatmeal instead of rice; as it's more soothing and easier on the digestion.

Thank you. What kind of oatmeal -- like Quaker Oats plain?

I think Teddy is okay with the chicken. He eats Fromm's Chicken a la Veg.

The only other thing that I can think of that may be causing this problem is that last night and this morning, I gave him 2 kibble pieces of Acana Pacifica.

maybe he's developing a sensitive to chicken since the Fromm is a chicken formula.
yes it's the quacker instant one min oatmeal; boil it on low heat for 10 or 15 min to make it mushy and easier to digest. you can even give that alone just to see if he gets better before adding any protein. serve it with a little of water for extra moisture.

There are two schools of thought, I suppose you could call it. Some feed a bland meal or whatever to try and settle their stomach and give nutrients. Others withhold food. I usually fall into category 2 b/c if I feed my dog after she vomits, she vomits some more. That would lead to a greater likelihood of dehydration. Sometimes they just can't hold it down and their GI tract needs to rest. So if you want opinions, mine is withhold food until tomorrow (watching very closely for hypoglycemia and dehydration). His stomach is obv. saying it can't take anymore right now...

I'll try the Oatmeal in the morning, and think about non-chicken kibble products.

Thank you for your input. I hope I don't have to withhold food because he still has a great appetite. He was begging for each meal and yogurt treat today even though he continued to throw up. I reduced the amount of everything I usually give him.

What is your choice of remedies for hypoglycemia and (mild) dehydration -- nutrical, pedialyte, or something else? He is over 7 pounds and has never had an episode before. Of course, if he is really bad, I'll go straight to the vet.

When I have the flu and am not supposed to be eating, I still like to eat too... Probably not always a great plan though.

Ellie usually has an appetite when this happens to her (although hers is worse and is related to pancreatitis). It sounds like after three meals and a snack, he has thrown up. Can't keep happening (IMO). Just puts him at more risk of dehydrating. When you start feeding again, start off verrrrrrrrrrry slowly with extremely reduced amounts.

Nutrical or karo syrup is fine for hypo and pedialyte is fine for dehydration, but that is generally speaking. There are issues that these things would be countraindicated for. Need to be careful about giving too much Nutrical without food because it really should be balanced with protein. Water is fine if he can hold it down (don't let him drink too much at once). If he keeps throwing that up, it would have to be pulled too.

Thank you. I'm always concerned about pancreatitis. Ugh. We'll see how he does tomorrow morning.

I personally withhold food when they are vomiting. I have had many bouts of pancreatitis with different pups over the years and the first thing the vet does is fluids, fluids, fluids....no food for the first 24 hours. Then, slowly introduce bland food. I use the Hill's ID or boiled chicken and rice.
Just make sure he is hydrated overnight and if he is still ill in the morning, I know you already know to get him to the vet. Check to be sure his gums are wet to the touch...if they are dry and sticky, he is getting dehydrated and I would get to the EC if that happens.
I hope it is just a passing little thing and he is better in the morning! :)

There are 2 rules of thought. Depending on the dog, size health conditions how to react. Need more info.

He is 7 pounds, 6 ounces. Although a healthy Yorkie size, he is a little waif, which I think contributes to him having a sensitive system. Otherwise, very healthy. Energetic today.
