Why is Phoebe itching/scratching/biting herself? So a couple of weeks ago we noticed that Phoebe was scratching one of her ears pretty badly and was itching parts of her body. Took her to the vet and turns out she had an ear infection and she was prescribed ear drops. That was really the major focus the other itching wasn't too much of an issue then. So now her ear is fine but she is constantly scratching the back of her legs and down towards her tail on the sides. Her skin is starting to get irritated and red. So I called the vet today and they prescribed Hydroxyzine and Omega Tri-V capsules. My concern is what is causing this in the first place?? Since the vet just saw her a couple of weeks ago and knew what she was suffering from already we didn't go in for a visit the vet just prescribed these two things. We are going to give it a week and see if there is improvement? What could it be? I have read food allergy. She eats Solid Gold Just a wee bit formula Bison mixed with Halo spots stew beef. She has been eating the Solid gold for almost 2 years and the Halo for a few months (she likes beef protein foods the best). Could she all of a sudden developed a food allergy? No stomach issues going on...She hasn’t been fed anything new. She is on Flea and Tick treatment and I haven't seen any fleas? She has never had allergies before could it be the change in weather or the time of year? Or could this have something to do with the bacterial ear infection that she was just treated for? I live in the Boston area....Any help would be appreciated....Thanks in Advance ~Bonnie & Phoebe |
It's tough to pin down what the problem could be. It could be as simple as the time of year and a skin allergy associated with it. But who knows? I'm surprised the dr didn't suggest benedryl first. If it isn't that big of a problem for your little one, just a single dose or two might put a stop to it. Otherwise, you may have to go through the process of elimination. I wish you luck and would hope you have time to update us.:) |
I remember one time when Hot Rod was itching really badly, the vet said that it could be due to his ear infection. That was almost 3 years ago when he was a baby. Between that and medicated shampoo and conditioner he cleared up. |
Did you by any chance change the shampoo you use? Or did the groomers change their products? Not sure how old your dog is, but maybe due to age, the need for a medicated shampoo may be necessary. |

I wash my face with Medicated shampoo. Do you suggest leeches for a viral infection? |

Could be so many things and if the vet can't figure it out, you may need a derm. But I've been taught that when it is toward the tail, it's flea allergy dermatitis until proven otherwise. It's less likely because you are using a flea preventative, but sitll possible. Have you looked with a flea comb? The flea drugs are becoming resistant. The antihistamine may help depending on what the problem is. |
If her skin is starting to get red and irritated, you will need to be on the look out for signs of a secondary infection (such as yeast or staph) that could make the itching worse. |

Are there any specific signs that you are thinking of? |

Yes I have read a lot about that....But the itching is actually on legs more so the front ones then the back. Also, she is licking as well,,,Idunno it's so frustrating. I wonder if Insurance would cover something like that?? |
I live in Boston and I think it's something to due with the weather or season allergies. A lot of pet owners that I know have brought this up and my Vet mentioned she noticed more reports of pets scratching, licking, itching and biting their skin. Zoey is on Frontline and I've never seen a flea on her, but this summer she was itching more, and biting & licking her front paws as well as scratching around her ears. I took her to her Vet and she didn't see any fleas on Zoey, no ear infection or anything major, her Vet just thought one area of Zoey's skin was dry so she prescibed DermaPet: Eicosaderm and it seems to be working. You're suppose to pump it on their food - it's as simple as that. Can be a struggle to get your dog to eat though - Zoey doesn't like the taste of it on her food! But it seems to be working - I've noticed less scratching and biting. It works for a lot of Dermatologic Diseases such as seasonal allergies, food allergies, flea bite allergy, seborrhea complex, pyoderma, dry & dull coats. I would give the Hydroxyzine and Omega Tri-V capsules a little bit of time to see if there is any difference and if the Rx's are working. |
