My vet did mention hydrocephalus....I have been reading about it and unfortunately my Jax has most of the symptoms:( Dome-shaped head, open fontanelle, progressive neuro symptoms....I also read something about pups that have hydrocephalus...they kick their legs out front when walking to make up for their weak back legs. This last symptom for some reason makes me very upset. My husband has commented several times about the way Jax walks. He does kick his front legs forward differently than Molly, my little girl does. I am terrified that my baby has hydrocephalus. Unfortunately there really is no treatment...is this correct or has someone heard differently? |
If I were you, I would get off the internet and contact your vet and tell them you want to make an appointment with a neurologist. He needs to be seen to determine what is going on. Believe me, you can make yourself crazy trying to diagnose your dog. My prayers are with you. I'm sorry for what you are having to go through :( |

I agree with everyone else....do not try to diagnose. The internet has some great information, but nothing will take the place of a good neuro exam. Make sure you find a board certified neurologist! Hydrocephalus has many different degrees and some dogs function ok without any major surgery or treatments. We had a darling pup with hyrdocephalus in our program who was adopted and is doing really well! |
I know you guys are right:) I am making myself NUTS!!!!!! I have convinced myself that he has every symptom that I read! I know better. I always discourage my patients from reading the internet and here I am doing it myself:D I have become a neurotic mother! I am going to get off the internet and quit reading because I am making myself more worried. Thanks everyone for your input. That is why I love YT! Jax's fontanelle does not protrude. And I think his head is perfect, not too big and not dome-shaped but thats just me:) |

Hydrocephalis is treated also with medications, and I won't scare you but it can be a symptom of other diseases. All are most often treated with medications to control the production of fluid going to the brain, and to get the excess fluid out. It is important, I'm sure you realize this, to determine if there is an underlying cause, and to get your pup on the appropriate regimen to eliminate or at least control his symptoms. Please do insist that your vet give you a referral to the neurologist. His BATs are WNL, so no shunt, at this time. |
The internet is a blessing and a curse,isn't it? Do yourself and Jax a favor and go see a neurologist so that you can get a good diagnosis, one way or the other, and start making plans. |
FYI: Much of the info on neuro conditions in Yorkies is old and doesn't offer much hope. Newer articles are all about treatments, so beware... |
I would definitely have more testing done. Even if they can't "fix" him, I am sure they can recommend something to make him (and you!) more comfortable. I just went through a scare with my baby so I know how you feel. Just make sure they check everything so you don't end up with more problems down the road that could have been prevented!!! |

My 9 month old yorkie, Trixie, just died Sunday because of liver shunt. She had a successful surgery on the 2nd..but she just deteriorated over the past weekend. |

Thanks for all your support! Jax has not had any more signs or symptoms so far but I am constantly watching and worried. Everything he does makes me nervous:confused: It seems like he is always hitting his head! My husband mentioned that it would be great if they made little helmets for puppies:D We have not had any other tests done yet. To be honest, I don't know what to test for. My vet says to wait, I don't know what to do...I obviously want to find out whats wrong but I don't want to seem overprotective or neurotic and my vet bill is 600+dollars right now. My little baby Molly was spayed on Friday so I have been watching her over the weekend as well. I am a nervous mother! I was trying to find info on animal neurologists but I don't think there are any in my area. Plus like I said, I don't know what to test for if he isn't having any other symptoms. What should I do? I am just terrified that if we wait for another episode then it will be too late:( I am so, so sorry about Trixie. I cannot imagine what you are going through. I will say a prayer for you and your baby. |
Tomorrow 26-I think if you trust your vet you should follow the vet\'s advice. He or she should know what test to run and when they are needed. If you\'re still nervous then I would get a second opinion from another vet. Being pro active might give you some peace of mind. I think worrying comes with the territory of having a yorkie you adore. Keeping Jax in my prayers. Stacey...I am so sorry to hear about your little Trixie. I know how devastated you must be. |
