broke foot!! advice! Poor Latte tried to climb down off the bed and last night she broke her foot in 2 places! She has a splint on her front left leg. Any advice for the rookie mom with the splinted leg?? |
Don't let her jump and keep her splint clean and dry. |
You may have to secure a plastic bag over the splint in wet or rainy conditions if she goes outside to potty, to keep the splint dry. |
Broke foot Thank you! I'm doing both of those things. I also have her on cage rest these first few days. I'm having a hard time figuring out what she wants and I don't want her to slip on the tile floors if I'm not around. I sure wish that splint didn't go all the way up to her shoulder! I'm going to put her baggie on her leg and take her out to her favorite poo spot! |
Maybe add a few area rugs and runners on her favorite 'trails' through the house would help keep her from slipping... or confine her to one or two rooms when you're not there... |
You can actually purchase anti skid tread tape, which is generally sold at hardware stores (lowes, home depot). You can cut small pieces and just stick them to the bottom of whatever you have covering her paw. Check the tape though, because if it's too rough it can scratch floors, but that's usually only when she's running or playing hard. |
Great idea! And buy booties or slippers for the other 3 feet! :D |
awww, poor baby. You've gotten some good suggestions. Sending some hugs and kisses for a speedy recovery. :) |
Broken foot Thanks, everybody! Really good suggestions. I'm keeping her in her kennel a lot, but being 8 years old, she's ok with that so far. Since our grass is usually wet in the mornings, I put a baggie on her splint. But my hubby had a great suggestion-he's going to pick up some condoms tomorrow to put on the splint when we go out. It will be less bulky and really keep it dry. Putting on the baggie with a rubber band is a pain, too. I had a long talk with Latte and told her that she's going to have to let me know when she wants to go potty or get a drink. We're pretty simpatico!!:D |

Let me know how the condoms work. I often get fosters who need surgery and that would be good to know! |
broken foot I sure will! Hubby says they used to use condoms over the barrels of their guns in the Army to keep them dry. The shape of the splint looks like a pretty perfect fit...as far as I know! |

Well, I have to tell you that my son laughed at me when he was here one day.....I said it looked like a used condom and he asked me how I knew...and made some kind of comment about the size of it. OK..now....next case... |
Did anticipate this snag! Ok, hubby went to store-all the condoms were lubricated-definitely not what we want-it's supposed to stay dry. My friend says they sell them at the 99¢ store...ok....probably no frills jobs, right? How much can you expect for 99¢?? I'll update tomorrow. Who knew? |

1 Attachment(s) When my boy broke his leg the vet gave me a covering for it. It has velcro and draw string worked perfect. It is called Medipaw. I checked on line and they are avaiable through the company website Medivet Products You can see it on Jersey's leg |

maybe that is why you can get a pregnancy test right next to them seen them yesterday :D:D:D |
Try to keep her splint clean and dry. Keep checking it daily if it is there in her leg with proper fitting. Avoid the movement of leg where there is a splint. TC.. |
I wonder if these would work... may have to get a larger size to fit the splint... Disposable Dog Boots & Booties :D |

How is Latte doing? Hope she is feeling better. |

How big is the OP's dog? |
I' so sorry she broke her leg! I hope she's feeling better and you can find some condoms or dog boots to help her out!!! |
Unless they go all the way up the leg, I would find them not quite adequate. Usually they don't piddle on that leg, but it can happen. I totally cover the entire wrap on the leg. That is why I use baggies...actually the zip lock ones because they are firmer at the top; and put plastic packaging tape around it. My vet makes covers out of IV bags...they run a piece of gauze around the top through slits so it gathers...you can tie it closed. |
