Small Cut Hi, I just cut Maya's skin by accident! :(:( I tried to cut her hair because it was matting and I cut a bit of her skin. She is not bleeding and I put a bit of "skin crack care" on it to seal it, but I feel awful!! Any suggestions? |
Looking at the "real" injuries on this forum, I understand that this is so minor but I still feel bad of hurting my baby... |
If it's not bleeding, I wouldn't be too concerned... Where did you cut her? Can she bite at it? |

If it is deep cut, you should have a vet look at it. Also, you need to watch carefully for signs of infection. This has happened to many people...I did it years ago to one of mine. The best way to deal with mats is to put a comb under them (between the mat and the skin) before cutting. You can also put powder on them before brushing...that will sometimes help. Stop beating yourself! Not like you meant to hurt her. :) |

Thanks! I checked her wound today and it looks OK. The skin care seal that I put really sealed it, so I hope she will be fine. I cut her hair again today, now with my fingers on her skin and she doesnt have scissors fear so I am happy! |
I did the same thing to my kitty cat one time. Just a little snip. My new rule is to never ever cut where I can't see between the skin and the mat. Bad mats can pull the skin up into the mat, so it's really risky to cut blindly into the mat. I'll have to try the comb thing... I can see kitty now running through the house with a comb stuck in his fur! Got to be better than cutting him! :D |

I put cornstarch on any mats and I found that if I use just the end of a comb, one or two teeth and gently tease the ends out away from the skin they come out fairly easily (most of them). Alot of times the hair is just tangled together so if you start where the ends are is may untangle readily for you. Good Luck! |
The only thing with cornstarch is that many yorkies are allergic to corn. |

Thanks so much! I used your trick yesterday and I felt very confident cutting those mats away. I dont even try to untie them, I just cut them off. As for the cut, Maya licked away the sealer I put few days ago. Today I just put a bit of anti-cut cream and covered it with a tiny band-aid. I hope it will heal soon. |
