The surgery went fine, he is awake, still in some pain, the pain meds have not kicked completely in yet.

He did have to go through the outside. I can pick him up tomorrow morning. He wants to do laser therapy on it in one week and 2 weeks, when the stitches come out. And then depending on how well he is doing maybe some more.

Glad he is waking up and doing well. The pup I told you about had the outside incision also and he was up and going in no time. Well wishes going Levis way...

Oh sorry to hear that. When does Tico have surgery? We'll be able to compare progress reports.

Tico go's to bone Dr. Monday, my 1st vet reffered him to a surgeny and we will find out then? I will be in touch here then. I hope your baby is well, there just so small to go through this:(. I love my yorkies so much and I do hope this helps.:animal-pa:aimeeyork

Good for Levi. I'm glad he did well. I knew he would. He will be up and around in a day or two and probably putting some weight on it by then. Farrah, 2 weeks post-op is running like the wind!
What is the laser therapy for? What benefits does it have?

I'm so glad things went well with your little boy. I hope he is running around as soon as he is allowed to. It is so sad to see our babies in any kind of pain.

He said it is like the lasers that chiropractors use. It causes a chemical reactilon in the muscle that gets rid of some of the stiffness and soreness, so they will start to use the leg sooner.

Did you call different orthopedic vets to compare prices. The one that my vet referred me to was twice as much as the one I took him to.

Hi, I did call 3 different vets and they were around the same price, 1200, Thanks god I have the money to do this, because so many people dont:aimeeyork I will keep you posted.

Thank you. Levi did great last night, he does chew at his stitches. he is eating and pooping, so back on track with that.

Today I will start to move his leg to keep the muscle loose. I just gave him pain meds, so will wait an hour or so before we do the therapy.

Jeanie, did your vet suggest this? The orthopedic specialist here does not recommend PT in the initial recovery. These pups need to rest and let the muscle heal around the bone to get stability in the joint.

That should have said DOES NOT chew at his stitches.

Not my vet, the orthopedic surgeon said to do that. To start slowly, but he believes early movement is important.

I kind of thought that was a typo or you would have said he has an ecollar on.

As for the pt, I do realize some vets recommend it. I posted merely out of curiousity as mine does not recommend it .. and he is very pro PT .. they have an extensive physical therapy program at their hospital.

I am not sure really....I know that he did not recommend therapy for Ozzy at least until he saw him for the suture removal. At the time I went for that, Ozzy was walking and he did not suggest therapy. Only slow walking on a leash. Slow walking makes them use their legs...if they walk quickly, they tend to lift the leg. I am dealing with one right now who had her knee reconstructed....she is on slow leash walking and doing well.

I had a cat done once ... she had a dislocated hip and they did FHO and she was totally on rest for the first two weeks.

Just looked at the take home sheet of instructions and it says to "start passive range of motion exercises immediately".

He had said no running or jumping, but to let him walk on it if he wants to.

I've been doing the range of motion exercises a couple of times a day for short periods. He must be pretty sore because he doesn't like them. I just do it gently and only for a couple of minutes each time. I think I saw him touch his toe down a couple of times last night.

He goes in for the laser therapy on Thursday.

I never did any of the above. The one foster I did had two hips done at the same time and he did remarkably well. He did not have any physical therapy at all....at home or at the vet and my vet has a quite large physical therapy program. I need to make a mental note to ask him about why he prescribes pt for some surgeris and not for others.

I have a friend who had this surgery on one of her yorkies two months ago and he is just now starting to use his leg on a consistent basis. She used a different surgeon and the only thing she did was water therapy. It just takes time.

Dr Nelson mentioned the possibility of having him swim if he doesn't start to use it on his own. But that would be after his stitches are out.

Funny how different vets have their preferences.

Oh yeah...I was not suggesting it...merely saying that was all that was done.

Yes, they are all different. Does not matter as long as there is a good outcome.

How did Tico's exam go. Did they schedule the surgery?

Levi is using his leg now, he limps on it but he is using it. Especially when trying to avoid me :).. I'm sure he hates me. Every time I pick him up, I'm either giving him a pill, or doing the exercises, or putting him in his little pen. So he tries to avoid me.

Hi, Tico will be having his surgery next Wednesday, They gave me Metacam to give him each day for pain. It is his right hip the bone is not in socket (xray), and has a sharp edge were they will have take some bone out. He's doing ok, but he is not my same little york that was always in to something :( . Cost will be 1,600. Thanks for asking and I will keep ya posted. I hope my dog has same out come as your Levi did, that is so great.

Good luck to you and Tico. I hope he does as well also. I was so happy to see him using it today, only 5 days after the surgery. I think he is going to be one happy guy once he is completely pain free. He frequently stands back and watches the others play. Now he'll be able to join in the fun.

Glad to here that your pup is doing fine, and sorry that you and op that have to go through this. Shayna had lpd at 8months, 3 vets were consulted, they all told me the same, that is not proof that is genetic, but it will be nice to notify the breeder about Shayna just to let her know, so I did, and she was in shock and surprise, she retired mom and dad. Shayna had it on the left leg got her operation, and you can even tell she had it, she don't limp she is a happy healthy dog, we call her our forever puppy because she always playing, she is 3 now and never had a problem again, with anything, her hair grow so well too, is now soooo long:thumbup: I praise God for that, ALWAYS:thumbup:

That is so good to hear.

Levi has a check up and laser therapy this morning.
