Sudden Ataxia and wretching?? Last evening Murphy (thirteen months old) had a couple of episodes of wretching without vomiting. He then started having ataxia, suddenly. He was having random jerky movements and seemed generally depressed, but responded to us appropriately. We took him immediately to emergency with suspician of poisoning, where he had bloodwork and xrays. They planned to put him under anesthetic, and do gastric lavage as well has IV hydration. The bloodwork indicated a lowered phosphate level. This would explain the ataxia and muscle jerks. Xrays did not indicate any foreign bodies in his stomach or intestine. They did not need to sedate him.He was given activated charcoal with our suspicions of an unknown ingested toxin. He was placed on IV and hydrated through the night and into today. Has anyone experience an occurance such as this and if so what were the findings if they were determined? |
I have never had anything happen like this. Hope your baby is well soon. Please keep us updated. |
Murphy Update Murphy is home. He is recovering nicely, having his kibble, a drink and is now asleep. His beard is charcoal stained, his pony is askew, hair matted, but he has never looked sweeter..... |
Oh, I am so happy to hear he is ok! So, you don't know what happened? Scary... Thanks for the update! |
Oh yes I did about 10 yrs ago I only had Buffy and Melissa ( Maltese ) both at that time wear 3 yrs old and they got into rat poison, we found the empty plastic rapper about 11am. We were not sure if they ate it or did a rat but I call the ER and they told me that by the time they show symptoms it will be too late. We took them to the ER and they gave them the charcoal, they made them throw up and poop. Both of them had it in their system, they kept them until 8am when they close then I had to take them to my reg. vet. they were put on vitamin B (I think) for a month then rechecked. Happy to say they both recovered just fine and they are both now 13 yrs old. |
Glad Murphy is home and doing better. |
