So confused :( well its been a while since i've been here, but i've been so busy these past months.Lexie had six puppies on July 5, 2010 and they are beautiful. This was her 1st and they are all a handful but i love them.During her pregnancy i switched her to Wellness puppy food and it seemed to be ok for a while. Then she started scratching and biting her legs after she gave birth.I took her to the vet and they said to watch it and see if i got better. They gave her Otomaxfor her ears because thats where her scratching was worst at. Two weeks went by and now her scratching is so bad that she has scars on her legs and is losing her all over her thighs. I took her this morning and the vet took some skin scraping suspecting that it could be mites but she couldn't find any. They gave my Termaril -P tabs for her scratching and gave me Revolution. The vet said if it doesn't get better it could be an allergic reaction to either food or environmental. I cant stand to watch Lexie scratching all over all the time...can someone please tell me if they have ever experience this before and if they have any advise to south her scratching. Sorry that its so long but i would like to get all the essentials in. |
I have a dog that is losing hair right now on her ears. I was researching mites and found that a skin scrape doesn't also show up correctly. I think it said 20% of the time? I don't know how accurate that information is but you may want to ask your vet. |
Mite are missed on skin scrapings very frequently, but the Revolution will help if that is the problem. You would see improvement within 24 hours. |
thank you so much for your input, i gave her The Revolution yesterday afternoon and she's still starching but not as much but im hoping for the best. |
since she started AFTER you gave her the food, I would highly recommend you try and switch her to something else to see if that helps. |
One of my guys is allergic to flea bites. Just one sends him into orbit. And fleas have appeared on the scene this summer after 10 years of none! So I started back on the Advantage but found that dipping him in an oatmeal bath twice a day really helped. Bought the colloidal oatmeal bath treatment, dissolved half in a deep tub of tepid water to cover him as high as I could and dipped it over him for about 5 minutes. Didn't rinse. His coat was as soft as could be and he was really soothed. Stopped the itching. Trouble, but worth it. Sprayed cages, and all the combined efforts have helped............but not letting up my attack for a while! Forgot how worrisome fleas can be! Wonder if the extreme heat has brought them back? |
Wouldn't you first consider that the food that you switched to is causing her itching? Try another food. Make sure it has a different protein base, if the Wellness contains chicken go to beef for example. Watch grains as they cause problems. If she was ok before the change that's the first thing I'd look at. And the allergic reaction to the ingredient in the food isn't always immediate. |
I know the raw dog food does wonders and it's so good for them. "Stella and Chewys" is a good brand. It's worth a try...I wish I had known of it's benefits when I had my Cocker Spaniel. Stella and Chewys even has a website. |
