Sick Puppy, Please Help! I have had my Shorkie puppy, Miley, since Wednesday. She was a little under 8 weeks (She turned 8 weeks yesterday). She was completely normal until the following night, when we had her in her crate and she vomited. It was a lot of vomit. And since then she has been sleeping almost all the time, not eating much, she's had diarrhea, and she has still been vomiting, although mostly it's just bile. We took her to the vet Thursday morning, and he said he wanted to keep her for observation overnight. When we went and got her the next morning, the vet said that she did not vomit once, and she was eating very well. We got pills for her to take every 12 hours, and we also got pills to give her if the vomiting persists. So we brought her home and she seemed perfectly fine, except for the fact that she was still tired. And then last night, she threw up again! But then right after she got a playful streak in her and was very hyper. And then today, she is doing the exact same thing again. Sleeping and vomiting. Except she no longer has diarrhea. She is drinking water though, but she is still not eating. We are all very worried about her, and ANY help anyone can give me at all is very much appreciated! :( |
Have you spoken to the breeder. I would try to entice her to eat with canned food. I dont know why she is vommiting but your biggest concern right now is the not eating because of hypoglycemia. She is too young to be away from her mom and littermates. The best age to bring a new pup home is 12 weeks |
We are about to drive out to the breeder to see how she is around her family, for maybe she was just homesick. The vet gave us some canned food for her, and we have been mixing karo syrup into her water to prevent hypoglycemia. |
Sorry to hear your pup is off to a rough start. You did the best thing by immediately going to the vet, so continue to follow up with vet's advice and call them on the phone until things get normal. What was the vet's diagnosis, and what is the name of the medication they have given. There are many possible reasons for the pups distress, ranging from minor things like changes in food, water and environment, to more serious illnesses which only a vet can diagnose. The breeder may be of some help, and the Yorkie Talk members can only guess, but the vet is the only one to give you answers. Good luck with your new pup, and I hope things turn around quickly and that you have many many happy healthy years together. Also, welcome to Yorkie Talk. I have a Yorkie, 3 Morkies, and a Schnauzer. |
Is a Shorkie a yorkie/snauzer mix? I don't think I've ever seen one...please post pics when things settle down & your baby is better. Was your baby eating dry kibble? If so, you may try to sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on it to see if this will get her to eat. |
The vet said it could have been something she ate combined with the stress of coming home. but she has been like this for days now and has had many bowel movements, so i figured if she did eat something it would have passed by now. The vet gave us Metoclopramide and Metronidazole. |

She is 3.7 pounds. We took her back to the breeder about an hour ago to let him take care of her, we are going to see how she is in 3 days. |
How is Miley doing? |
Checking in for an update... hope all is well with your little one... |
