Can you guys help? Sick 8 mo old with video ... This chihuahua puppy belongs to a friend. She is 8 months old and about 3.5 pounds. She has been having these episodes where she gets disoriented and acts drunk, staggering, tremors, etc. The first time she did it, she took her to the emergency vet and they ran tests, but everything came back OK. Blood glucose was fine, she was NOT hypoglycemic. (Even though it kind of looks like it on the video). Both times this has happened, it has lasted several hours! She sleeps hard after and then wakes up normal. Her vet then ran bloodwork the next morning and everything came back normal. Bile acid tests were normal. (They thought liver shunt, but it came back ok). She has not gotten into any poisons, nothing has changed in the house. The first time she just chalked it up to some mysterious illness, but now it has happened again. Can you guys look at the video and give me any feedback???? Her owner is just beside herself. She's in Canada and is going to take her to Guelph, but does anyone have any ideas at all what this could be? A seizure? |
I would guess it is a seizure. |
I think I'd have her evaluated by a neurologist, as her bloodwork hasn't shown anything. Encephalopathies (brain disorders) are common in small breed dogs. Maybe you could send the video to her vet or a neurologist, prior to her appointment. I'd get her seen asap. |

That poor baby. I hope they can get this disorder figured out and able to treat. I can imagine how worried sick your friend must be. I'll say a prayer! |
Just wanted to add that many disorders that were considered terminal a few years back are now being managed with appropriate medications and/or surgery. So don't lose hope... keeping you both in my prayers... |
My Yorkie, Brooke was diagnosed with GME a neurologic brain disease. It is usually diagnosed with an MRI and spinal tap. The chi puppy looks like she could have it. After your friend sees the neurologist, if it is diagnosed as GME, Granulomatous Meningioencephalitis, then there is a yahoo group that is for GME dogs, for info and support, here is the link: NewGMEDogs : NewGMEDogs |
Just curious, I know you said she was tested for shunt and hypoglycemia but when she's having an episode has your friend tried giving nutrical ? and did the dog eat prior to going to the vet ? Was she recently vaccinated ? I believe someone has mentioned GME and it's very possible. Also Chiari malformation is common in this breed and GME and Chiari can have same symptoms, both are diagnosed by MRI and Spinal Tap and both can be treated successfully. |
Yes, she gave her nutrical at the first sign of the staggering and wooziness. It didn't help at all. The dog had recently eaten. Blood sugars during the bloodwork all came back within normal limits. I don't know about vaccination. I will ask about that. I will mention both of these possible conditions to her and I'm glad to see that an MRI is helpful, as I think that is the what she is planning for now. That looks really similar to what my Stormy used to look like when she had weird episodes! She suffered from seizures. We never figured out what the cause was. She passed away last July due to a seizure we believe. I heard Guelph is really good, I pray your friend finds out what is wrong with her baby! It is just heart breaking seeing them like that :( |
