Puppy exposed to parvo...possibly
 

Hi all!

I have a question and a BIG concern.

I believe my 18 week old puppy Bella may have been exposed 'briefly' to parvo. She has had only 2 of her parvo immunizations. (She was due for her third, but came down with Coccidia 4 weeks or so ago, and was waiting for her to completely recover and was planning on the third shot this week.) It is 3 in the morning and I am in a panic, even though she isn't sick. She was exposed only 3 days ago.

My daughter acquired a puppy from a friend. (about an 8 week old Pit mix) I went to see the puppy at her house, and explained to them that Bella couldn't come and play until their puppy had her shots. The next day they stopped over with the puppy. They had her in the house playing with Bella before I even knew their puppy (Bossy) was here. They played for about 15 minutes before I knew they had brought their dog. When I realized she was here, I made my daughter take her out of the house away from Bella and again explained why they shouldn't be 'playing'. (She was showing no signs of illness at the time they were together.)

Now tonight, 3 days later, I get a panicked text from my daughter saying their puppy has bloody diarrhea and is very lethargic. :( As college students they can't afford the emergency vet. Sounds very much like parvo to me. I am going to give them the money to take their dog to the vet in the morning. (I can't see any animal suffer.)

But my major concern is for Bella. She is still pretty young, and very small only 2 pounds 12 ounces, but extremely healthy. Is there anything I can do to prevent her, at this point, from coming down with this?? Or maybe to boost her immune system, anything!! I am sooooooo worried, I am just sick. I have heard of something called Parvaid, that helps puppies with parvo, and also is supposed to help with puppies who have been exposed to it. Anyone know anything about this stuff??

Why O WHY do these things happen on the weekends. Any advice would be wonderful!!!!!!!!

I can not speak from personal experience as I've never used it but I have heard from others who swear by it on one of my breeding sites. It might be worth it to try and hopefully if she does contract it, it will help lesson the severity. Good luck, I hope she doesn't get it at all. I hate Parvo!

How old was she when she got her first two vaccines? Normally, two vacs are sufficient to provide immunity, if given when the maternal antibodies are gone. That's why 3 vaccs are given, to be sure.

In any event, I would put a call in to your vet and see what they say. Also, maybe add coconut oil to her food, it's an immune system booster, an antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal.

Be sure to clean anything with a 5% bleach solution, throw out any toys that can't be cleaned. You can use Clorox bleach for colors on your carpeting.

Also, bathe the puppy, to remove any saliva from the sick dog. If the sick pup was outside, spray the bleach solution on the lawn or walkways. Parvo can live in the environment for months.

Sorry you're having this scare - I'd def let your vet know and also - follow what others just said - Parvo will live on surfaces a long time so you may want to proof the areas you know the dog was and hope yours didnt make contact.

parvo is a horrible illness and especially goes after young dogs. .....if you see any signs of changes in her behavior call/take her right into the vet and don't wait.

Just an update..

I got to my daughters house, and her puppy was on deaths door. LITERALLY. Body temp was 93 :eek: and completely lifeless...I rushed to a feed store and bought parvaid and vibactra plus. Both natural parvo treatments. While there talked to a vet, she said, she is 99% sure going to die, but might as well try these meds, but she WOULDN"T recommend them. We got back to the house, the poor baby was still lifeless. Now literally within 2 doses of parvaid and vibactra plus, the baby is up and running around, EATING, and drinking. 3 hours later She had her first BM and was NO blood at all, still a bit soft, but not diarrhea. Her temp is up to 100.4, WHEW!!! All I can say is WOW!!!! This stuff is a miracle. In the boxes there are recipes for concoctions that are good for parvo to keep them from dehydration. I mixed up ALL of the batches of that, with beef liver and banana.....and oatmeal water tea.

I started Bella on the preventative doses, and all I can do is hope and pray that this works as well as people say. Its stated that 90% of puppies that are given this stuff will not contract the illness if they are given it early, before symptoms start. So far Bella is healthy as can be, playing and eating like crazy. 3 days down only 11 to go....ugh.

I highly recommend parvaid and vibactra plus!

ohhh Bella had her vaccines at 8 weeks and 12 weeks....give or take a day or two.

Another quick update, Bella is still fine and showing no signs of parvo. We are going on day 12, so hopefully we are in the clear. I have been giving her parvaid and vibactra plus, not sure that is has helped, but yahooo no parvo for us.

Also daughters puppy is completely recovered from parvo due to the parvaid. :)

Sooo glad your baby and your daughter's pup are doing well!!! And that is a REALLY handy thing for everyone to know about the parvaid and vibactra - seems like a absolute miracle! What a great mom for acting so quickly.

It's not the parvo itself that kills pups; it's not staying hydrated. Pups that survive still carry the disease & should never be allowed around others that are unvaccinated.
We went through this with my daughters dog about 18 months ago & it was terrible.

Im glad that the pup was okay.
Because your Bella had two of her shots it is unlikley that she could have gotten it, here in England the pups only have 2 shots (at 8 and 12 weeks) I know they have more then 2 in the USA, but it will still leave it unlikley that she would catch it.
Thats not 100% though because Im sure more experienced breeders/owners will correct me if Im wrong :)
