Lexie-metronidazole side afffects
 
Lexie was diagnosed with a liver shunt about 3 weeks ago and our vet started her on metronidazole, 1/2 tab a.m. and p.m, plus we changed her from Science Diet L/D to Science Diet K/D. She had improved greatly. We boarded her in order to go out of town on vacation (with a wonderful kennel) and they called us this morning saying she was having trouble walking and trouble with her backend - knowing some of the effects of liver disease I thought the worse - new symptoms involving neurological symptoms. Our kennel delivered her to our vet and our vet said that metronidazole side effects can mimic the neurological signs of advancing liver disease. This was news to me - just want to warn anyone on this drug to be aware of this. Our vet took her off this drug and ran blood work checking her liver enzymes, which he said her enzymes levels are as good a results as he seen on her in a long time - so I guess the L/D, and changing to the K/D has improved her liver. Has anyone else has these side affects from this antibiotic and, if so, have you had any luck with a different antibiotic?

Never heard of this being a side effect. Most Liver Shunt dogs I know are on Metro AND Lactulose and low protein diet. K/D is usually NOT used becuase it has pork in it, and that little bit of pork can cause neuro (HE) symptoms in Liver Shunt dogs.

Here's another thought, did you have to give her any shots/vaccines to board her? That could have set off the HE too :(

Don't know about dogs and metroniadzole but use it on tons of people and have never seen this side effect.

In humans, prolonged high doses can cause CNS toxicity and peripheral neuropathies.

Was it prescribed as an antibiotic, or due to general diarrhea?

Gosh, I didn't know that the K/D could cause the HE symptoms - I guess I should think about changing her to the RC LS diet - no on the shots; she is 3 yrs and our vet decided not to give her her shots this year due to all the liver issues; so luckily I don't have to worry about that - thank you for the thoughts on her diet.

I guess I'd better do some more research on this drug - the vet sounded pretty convincing (or not surprised) that she might have this reaction to this drug.

It was prescribed as an antibiotic for her liver issues. I had also read on the Yahoo Yorkie Liver discussions that is the preferred antibiotic for liver dogs, so I'm somewhat surprised to hear that it can cause this problem.

Have used flagyl , I'm sure thousands of times, never have I seen these side effects. I see that it is possible, but never have I seen it happen. At what dosages and frequencies have you seen this?

Usually at the 750 mg/day level on repeated courses for amebiasis. We would get lots of strange things being so close to the border in San Diego. We didn't get a lot of this side effect, I only remember a handful of cases and the patients were older and generally had an underlying liver disease in addition to the amebiasis. I remember one pediatric case, too, but that was a case of endocarditis and was also prolonged use.

Thanks for responding. I was very curious. We use Flagyl a lot and I now wonder if perhaps these symptoms weren't noticed due to already existing conditions. Will have to watch for this. You never stop learning new things. Thanks again :)
