Lil Bit's legs A few weeks ago her front legs "went", took her to the emergency vet - had to leave over a $900 deposit. had to leave her there. They called an hour later said she was fine and the neurologist couldn't find anything wrong. her front legs just went again. I don't know why it is happening, but taking her to the emergency vet didn't do anything last time, and ended up being expensive. My husband thinks we should just wait and see if she is OK in a little while, I honestly don't know what the best thing to do is. She is around 8 years old, so not very old. |
We decided to call our vet, found out he is there on a Saturday until 4. They said we could take her in. So, Bruce gets ready to take her,and the little rascal found the use of her legs again! She was also panting bad. Now she is fine. I called the vet back and we are taking her in on Monday now. Why is it that as soon as you panic and call the vet, the little rascals act normal! Guess it's like when I go see the doctor and when I get there I am already feeling better! |

I would also keep the apt. for today if at all possible. Her panting, as megansmomma mentioned, could be her in pain. :( Also, since she just recovered the use of her legs, it may be eaiser to see a problem rather than waiting until Monday. |
Oh - I don't think she is capable of faking being sick. Last time it happened the neurologist examined her and couldn't find anything wrong. She was panting that time as well. This is exactly the same thing as last time. So weird. Lasted for an hour or two then everything fine, same as today. Now she is acting normal, drinking water and eating her food. We are keeping a very close eye on her. Vet will be there until 4pm, and if we need him after that we can call him instead of going to the emergency clinic. We didn't know that last time, or we would have called him instead of the emergency clinic. He is an excellent vet - all the vets in that practice are great. He is in the next county, but we prefer him to the local vets. |
Has anyone taken full X-rays of her neck & spine ? She could have a disc out in her neck or upper back. Also at 8 this could be Chiari malformation. |

Chiari is a deformity at the base of the skull and is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 2 and 6 yrs but can show up at any age. Chiari can only be properly diagnosed with MRI and spinal tap. Chiari can cause subarachnoid cysts in the brain, hydrocephalus and what appears to spine & neck issues it can cause sporadic lameness and temporary blindness and unexplained stomach issues. These are just a few of the things Chiari can cause. |
I had a small breed poodle mix and he did the same thing. He would be really wobbly for awhile not being able to use his legs, we took him to the vet numerous times before they told us he had a liver shut (which is common in yorkies). Basically your baby may not be processing protein due to the shunt and it causes that to happen in her legs. You might want to mention that when you see the vet next time. ;) (He too would gain and lose the use of his legs in the matter of hours). Until then watch how much protein your baby is eating. |
