Abnormal test results So I took Belle in for a yearly examine, I asked for a complete bloodwork. My vet phoned today and said all looks good except, her GGT is 22 (normal 0-14 according to vet) and her WBC is a little low. She didn't seem overly concerned, suggested we redo bloodwork in a month. Belle had been on maintenance Metacam for awhile now for her back...a few doses weekly. A big thanks for a suggestion I recently received via PM, Dr. G and I had decided yesterday to discontinue the Metacam as a maintenance and begin using the supplement Ester C. Any thoughts on her GGT and WCB? From what I have read the GGT could be indictative of obstructed bile duct, an inflamed gall bladder, or pancreatitis. Her heartworm test was negative, her lyme's was positive....but it has been positive for forever, every year. |

She didn't, she just said everything looked normal except for the GGT and WBC. DH will be picking up a copy tomorrow just so I have it and know what everything is. :( |

by chance is Belle on any or has she had any anticonvulsants or corticosteroids (pred, cortisone, dexamethasone)? |
Unless there is a reason to be alarmed, waiting 30 days and retesting does not seem unreasonable. We did this when Lucy first had her bile acid testing. After a change in diet and retesting 30 days later, her test results came back much better. Some folks wait 30 days and retest - and everything comes back normal. I guess different things can skew the results but beyond that, I don't know much more. Hope you get good results. |

I have changed Belle's diet to the liver cleansing diet after reading so much about NSAIDs, she has been on Metacam therapeutically (2-4 doses a week) since the summer of 2007. Just went down to the ER vet we use and they gave me a copy of her labs from last October 1st. Everything was normal, GGT was 2. So I will get these to my vet tomorrow and retrieve a copy of her latest for comparison. Other supplements she receives are Vetri-Disc, fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin in the form of Zuke's Hip Action. These are daily and we are now adding Ester C. Nothing else. |

I agree with Ringo. Unless there are other signs that concern you or your vet, waiting the 30 days and retesting is a good idea. |
We were only going to start the Ester C tonight, and at this point I am holding off with adding anything until the re-test or a better discussion with my vet. We have stopped the Metacam though, she was due tonight. I am usually all doom and gloom, but I am going to try to be a PollyAnna this time, she will be fine. Next tests will be normal. She acts like a young pup, when she isn't sleeping. No behavorial changes, appetite changes or anything for alarm. So happy thoughts. :) |
