Harley diagnosed with pancreatitis... Hi all, I am new here. Our Harley started to get sick two weeks ago; throwing up, eating grass, etc. We happened to be on holidays at the time so thought maybe he ate something on the ground. We took him to the vet last week because he kept throwing up and eating grass. They finally did a CPL (or CLP I can't remember) and found that his lipase was high, indicating pancreatitis. So, he has been on antibiotics ever since, Purina Gastro ENtric, and some probiotics to help increase his good bacteria levels. He has been doing much better although he didn't start drinking much water until yesterday. I had been giving him water through a syringe. This morning he ate and then promptly threw it up. Just wondering if I should be concerned. He really likes this new food and I think he eats it just a little too fast so maybe that is why he threw up? I am just a little paranoid right now. Any thoughts? |
Hi and welcome to YT. Sorry you found us under these circumstances. Was your baby able to keep down any food this afternoon? If not, I would be concerned if this has been going on for two weeks. |

If he is throwing up every meal, the vet wll need to decide what to do (IVs, etc.). But it sounds like as long as he eats slow, it's okay. So can you hand feed for now? Pancreatitis can take a toll on them and it may take a bit before he is back to normal. I'd just try to get him to slow down and see if that helps. If it doesn't, the vet needs to know. |
When Laci had pancrititis my vet told me to NOT force feed water, it just agravates the stomach, she did get sub q fluids , she was on boiled chicken and rice and ate after a couple days. She is fine and I have not had an episode since! |
Thanks for all the replies. Yes, he kept the rest of his meals down today and he is drinking on his own. I think he just ate too fast this morning...he ate much slower the next time. Hopefully he is on the mend!! |
Barney had pancreatitis at age 5 and then he got it again in March of this year (he's almost 10). It does take a toll on them. The first time, Barney got over it fairly quickly but this time it has taken longer. He really was not doing great for about a month. He lost a whole pound in one week. He is pretty much back to 100% but we are very careful. They need a lot of rest after an attack and you really have to be strict with their diet. Smaller meals are often easier for them to digest. We stuck to 4 meals a day for the first month. I hope Harley feels better soon. I know what you are going through. |
I am learning a lot through this. With the drinking, I was so afraid he would get dehydrated that I thought I needed to get some liquids in him. But I can see that it might be an irritant as well. Yes, I will give him smaller meals for sure! Thanks for all the information.:) |
